    Once I heard of John Chaney's passing, it took a few days to regroup and formulate my thoughts.  When I learned that I had missed his service, I was heart-broken. I could not accept the fact that I did not get a chance to say goodbye, much less pay  my respects to his family.
     When I first arrived at Furr High School in 1969 as a first year teacher, John was  J.V. basketball coach.  Since I was the drill team sponsor, I had to attend all sporting events.  I got to know and respect John  not only as a coach but also as a classroom teacher.  A few years later when it was announced that John was our new assistant principal, we were  excited.  We knew  we had the best administrators in HISD in John and Ann Limerick. 
    In 1985 I was named Assistant Principal.  We were three peas in a pod, my always being  "the rookie" or "the kid" which they never let me forget.  But in 1987 all changed.  A mass exodus of principals began,  five within four years,  but John and I remained .  Everyday we expected the inevitable move of one or both of us, but that day never came.  We ended up spending thirteen years together.
    Not only was John my counterpart, he was one of my closest friends.  We laughed together;  we ranted together;  we protected each other.  We comforted each other when discouraged.  He was there when I lost my brother and then my father.  I was there for him when he lost in Vegas or at the dog track.  We always supported each other.  We were brother and sister.  We could finish each other's thoughts. We could predict each other's  moves.  We treasured each other's friendship.
    Then one fateful day John retired.  I cried for days leading up to his last day.  It was one of the hardest times of my life.  In retirement we  kept in contact.  Our friendship never waned.  However, now he is gone, but my heart will forever remain connected to him.  Just know, John, that I will still be there for you, win or lose, when you find God's dog track in the sky.   

My mom, Marilyn Lowry, worked with Mr. Chaney at Furr. He and I used to sit together at basketball and football games. Basketball was my absolute favorite. He and I would talk constantly about the games and he gave me tremendous insight into the sport. Today, I write about basketball and even co-wrote the Houston Rockets 50th anniversary book. Mr. Chaney was a big part of my love for the game and my knowledge of it. He was a great man and I was so sorry to hear of his passing. All my love to his family and know that he was loved by many.

I was a counselor at Furr High School when John was an assistant principal.  We shared many times working with kids and attending football games when I was a cheerleader sponsor.  My son Jeff usually attended with me and just loved "Mr. Chaney".  
I remember times when John would ask me to come to his office to speak with a student that he knew needed counseling more than discipline.  I remember when he would remind them that, "This isn't Burger King...you don't get to have it your way."
What a beautiful friend...you will be greatly missed.  Much love to his family and friends.

                                              John Chaney's Legacy
     First, I would like to say that John Chaney was a gift from God; his greatest strength was to SERVE.
     John Chaney was a Teacher and Assistant Principal for over 20 years at FurrJr/Senior High School.  His wisdom and knowledge allowed him to lead by example, etc:
     1. He was a poet; in his office, what got your attention were         these famous words; "YOU PREPARE FOR TOMORROW, BUT YOU LIVE TODAY AS THOUGH THERE'S NO TOMORROW!"
      2. He attended all the school activities and encourage one to be strong. He said "it's a poor frog that would not take care of its pond."
I am so great ful for all the things that John Chaney done for me, and to his family, you be blessed.

My deepest sympathies go out to the John Chaney Sr family. I am honored and blessed to have had Bro. John Chaney Sr as a neighbor, friend and fraternity brother.  I will truly miss our many conversations on his favorite topic, sports.  I always had great respect for his knowledge and wisdom on life in general.  He was a great Sigma man, and will be missed but never forgotten.

Mr. Chaney was my assistant principal at Furr High School (class of 81).  He was the coolest.  Our entire classed loved him.  He even attended several of our high school reunions.  I was fortunate to see him in 2019 at Lubys.  He called out my  last name and my friends who were with me said not sure if that is a good or bad  thing that your principal remembers your name lol.  My condolences and prayers to his family.  Rest Easy Mr Chaney. 🙏🏼
