Joe Edward Kwong, age 93, passed away peacefully on August 12, 2024. He was born on September 12, 1930, in Rolling Fork, Mississippi, to the late Kwong Joe and Ping Quan. Edward was a beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend.
The funeral service will be held at Forest Park Westheimer Funeral Home, located at 12800 Westheimer Road, Houston, Texas 77077, on Saturday, August 24, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. The family will welcome visitors for a visitation on Friday, August 23, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the same location.
Edward was preceded in death by his sister, Hoi Far Yee, and his brothers, Jim Kwong, Charlie Joe and Sam Joe. He is survived by his devoted wife, Helen Kwong, with whom he shared many joyful years. Together, they raised a loving family, including his children, Mary Yee (Gene Yee), David Joe (Jenny Hyun), Linda Moy (James Moy), Shirley Lee (Bailey Lee), and Ken Joe (Erin Joe).
Edward was the proud grandfather of Michelle Hsu (Chris Hsu), Elizabeth Yee, Jordan Moy (Annie Lin), Matthan Moy, Christian Lee, Justin Lee, Hayley Joe, Jacob Moy and Jackson Joe, and the cherished great-grandfather of Summer Hsu. He also leaves behind numerous nephews and nieces who will remember him fondly.
A hardworking and dedicated individual, Edward spent his early career as a butcher before joining Hughes Tool Company. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to purchase and renovate rental properties and to own and operate the China Maid Cafeteria and later the Express Mart grocery store, where he built enduring relationships within the Chinese community.
Edward's passions reached far beyond his work. He found great joy in spending time with his family, cooking, gardening, traveling, playing mahjong, and visiting with friends. His skilled hands brought craftsmanship to woodworking projects, house renovations, and painting. Joe Edward Kwong's legacy is one of dedication, love, hospitality and creativity. His memory will be cherished forever by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
