Jesse Lee Green, (age 81), of Houston, Texas, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 5, 2024. Although his passing was unexpected, his wife, children and grandchildren were able to say their goodbyes. He was born in Hamilton, Texas on June 27, 1942 to Floyd and Florina Green. He was the eldest of two children and was raised in the Pecan Wells community. He will be remembered as a loving husband, a proud father, and caring grandfather to a family that will cherish many fond memories of time spent together.
Jesse graduated from Pottsville High School in 1960. He was involved in football, basketball, FFA, 4H and Boy Scouts. During his time in high school, he received his Lonestar FFA degree. After graduation, he continued his education at Tarleton College where he stayed involved in collegiate FFA. During college, he attended the National FFA convention with his AG teacher in Kansas City, Kansas, and received an American Farmers Degree.
Jesse furthered his education at Sam Houston State College in Huntsville, Texas. While attending, he participated in the Rodeo Club and FFA. In 1966, he earned a Baccalaureate Degree in Science of Agriculture. In 1971, Jesse received his Masters Degree in Education from Sam Houston State University.
In 1966, Jesse married Betty Smith in Houston, Texas, and moved to Mullin, Texas. He taught Science and Agriculture at Mullin High School until May, 1970. In 1970, he joined his in-laws, Curtis and Verna Smith, in the family business at Smith’s Lucky Seven Supermarket on the corner of Westview and Silber in Houston, Texas. Jesse was on the Board of Directors of the Houston Retail Grocery Association for many years. He was a lifetime member of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and a member of the Livestock Committee for 18 years. He was also involved in the Afton Village HOA.
Jesse was very active in his children’s activities and after retirement, he continued to take part in his grandchildren’s activities including volunteering at St. Marks Lutheran School, sporting events at Stratford High School and mentoring at Cy-Wood FFA projects and Booster Club. Jesse enjoyed hunting at the family’s property in Hamilton, Texas. His hobbies included gardening and working on his land in Cypress. He was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church.
Jesse is pre-deceased by his parents, Floyd and Florina Green, his in-laws, Curtis and Verna Smith, his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, David and Joyce Archibald of Houston, Texas, and his brother-in-law, David Butler, of Arlington, Texas. He is survived by his beloved wife, Betty of 57 years, his daughter and husband, Kellie and Roger Fritcher, his son and wife, Chris and Michelle Green. Grandchildren: Connor and Kaitlyn Fritcher, Ashley Fritcher, Nicole and Kyle Green. Sister: Jo Ann Butler, and numerous nieces and nephews.
We would like to thank the Critical Care Unit at Memorial Hermann Medical Center as well as the Emergency Room and Cardiology Department of Memorial Hermann-Cypress for their professionalism, kindness, and compassionate care.
A visitation with the family was held from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 15, 2024 at Waltrip Funeral Directors, 1415 Campbell Road in Houston, Texas. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday at Messiah Lutheran Church, 11522 Telge Road in Cypress, Texas. Burial followed in Woodlawn Garden of Memories, 1101 Antoine Drive in Houston.
