James Elton Stroud, 79, went to be with his Lord on January 6, 2013. He was born July 23, 1933 in Winnsboro, Louisiana to W. A. and Lilly Stroud. Husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and brother, he is survived by his loving and faithful wife, Jeanette Travis Stroud, daughter, Jawonna Pinell and husband Robert of Dayton, Texas; son, Elton Stroud and wife Rhonda of Lakewood, Colorado; son, Doyle Stroud and wife Debbie of League City, Texas; sisters Lois Temple and Audrey Dunham of Winnsboro, Louisiana, and Lela Hollaway of Odessa, Texas; grandchildren, Ben, Janna, Jawonna Marie, Ashley, Amber, Janeen, Brandi, and Shanna; 14 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was a member of the Royalwood Penecostal Church and was blessed to have shared 62 years of life with his beloved wife, who was the love of his life, his refuge and best friend. He loved to hunt. If it wasn’t deer season, he was hunting rabbits and other 4-legged critters using his trained team of hunting dogs. He also had a hankering for fishing and hosted many fish fries for family and friends following a big catch, and boy, were those fish good! When the fish weren’t biting, he was most likely tinkering in his backyard shop, mowing grass with his riding lawn mower, challenging family and friends to a competitive game of dominoes that he rarely lost, writing poems and song lyrics, or playing favorite tunes on his harmonica for anyone who would listen.
He was Goliath in the eyes of his family, but an ole softy at heart. His sentimental nature would instantly bring him to tears when hearing a cherished song from the past, reading a poem he wrote, or recalling a fond memory. He always said he wanted to build a big compound for all his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren to come and live.
He loved coffee in the morning and iced tea and popcorn in the evening while watching reruns of Bonanza, or Gunsmoke. He was a loyal fan of the Texans, Astros, and Denver Broncos. His door was always open and welcoming to visitors. Spoiling grandchildren and great grandchildren was his best-all-around specialty and his lap was always available for their enjoyment and entertainment.
If you were lucky enough to be around him at meal time, you could savor some of his Mississippi-Louisiana cooking, and there was always a cold watermelon and ice cream on hand during the summer months as dessert. He always made sure you left with a full stomach and many good memories of your visit.
The family will receive friends on Friday, January 11, 2013 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. with the funeral service from 12:00 – 1:00p.m. at the Advantage Howard-Glendale Chapel, 1015 Federal Rd., Houston, TX 77015. Interment will follow at San Jacinto Memorial Park.
