Jim gave up a college scholarship and joined the Navy right after Pearl Harbor. He was soon on the cruiser San Juan fighting enemy battleships off Guadalcanal. Jim shot down an attacking plane after the gun crew was killed. He was picked for OCS and while there he met his true love, Willena Elaine Byrd. He became an officer on the Battleship Texas and was at Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
Jim owned Lamb Claim Service, for thirty plus years. For fifty years, he was an active member of First Methodist Church and served in the Adelphi Sunday School class.
Jim is preceded in death by his wife, Willena; his brother, Drue, killed in action at Tarawa; and his sister, Iris Jackson. He is survived by his sons, James Howard Lamb, Jr., and Ronald Craig Lamb, who know they couldn’t have had a better dad; his daughter-in-law, Catherine; his grandsons, Winston Callis Lamb and Stephen James Lamb; his sister, Peggy Wood; his brothers, Dale and Don; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday at Forest Park Westheimer.
Funeral services will be Wednesday 10:00 a.m. at First Methodist Church downtown with a reception to follow and then internment. In lieu of flowers the family suggests support of the Battleship Texas Restoration Fund.
Jim was there when his country needed him, when his family needed him and when his friends needed him.
