James Davis was born to the late Alonzo and Cornelia Davis on October 8, 1928, in Richards , Texas located in Grimes County. At an early age he eagerly accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior and was baptized. He attended and graduated from Richards Colored High School in May of 1945. On February 13, 1951, he courageously joined the United States Army where he served his country diligently as Corporal James Davis during the Korean Conflict. He later transferred on February 14, 1953, to the Army Reserve Unit where he received an Honorable Discharge.
On September 15, 1956, James married Dorothy Mae Ellis, and in the autumn, he would move his family to the Studewood, Independence Heights Community, in Houston, Texas. He was a loving husband and father who reared his children in the fear and admonishment of the Lord. He considered his son Ricky and his beautiful daughter Debra Rene, both whom he cherished to be a blessing from God. Upon settling within the community, he joined the Greater New Hope Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor H.L. Price, and where the Holy Spirit would call him to serve as a Deacon for a dedicated forty years. In February of 1996, the Holy Spirit would lead him to move his Church Membership in support of planting a new congregation, along with an additional fifty-five founding members to form the Holy Bible Way Church under the leadership of Pastor H.J. Harvey, Jr. Through his support and leadership as a Deacon and Trustee of the Church, he excitedly watched the Church grow tremendously in the Lord and where he remained faithful until God called him from labor to reward.
During Deacon Davis life's tenure he was always desiring to be industrious, he was the type of man who always enjoyed staying busy and engaged in some activity including helping others in need. After working several career - oriented positions at J.C. Burton, Folgers Coffee, and The Houston Record Company. God ultimately placed him t Fleming Foods where he found passion and worked as a forklift Operator before he retired after twenty-five years of dedication to his work in 1991.
Upon retirement and always wanting to remain busy he started his very own lawn service business where he became highly sought after within the Studewood, Independence Heights Community and surrounding areas. He took great pride in keeping lawns immaculate.
After many years remaining as a widower from his first marriage, he found love again with Beulah Mae Smith. Honoring, God's covenant of marriage he and Beulah were married on December 31, 2016, and remained happily married until his death. Deacon James Davis was a praying and God-fearing man with a strong spiritual conviction. He always expressed great faith in the Lord and shared his godly wisdom with everyone he met.
On Friday, April 12, 2024, God dispatched an Angel to close his weary eyes, and comfort him into sweet peaceful and eternal rest where he shall be with God throughout eternity. He leaves to cherish his lasting memories and legacy, first and foremost his loving and devoted wife, Beulah Mae Davis. His children; son Ricky (Sheryal) Byerly, and daughter Debra Rene Ellis; Grandchildren; Jelani and Bryan; Godson, Joel Kenneth North, Jr. and many other nieces, nephews, family, friends and especially his Holy Bible Way Church family.
A visitation will be held on April 25, 2024 from 10am to 10:45 am at Holy Bible Way Baptist Church located at 100 E. Tidwell St. Houston, Texas 77022. Immediately followed by a funeral service at 11am. The committal will be held from 2pm to 2:15pm at Houston National Cemetery 10410 Veterans Memorial Houston, Texas 77038.
