Elder James Casey, Sr. was born on May 12th, 1921, to the late Rev. William Jack Casey and the late Mrs. Mary Ella DeChristopher Casey in Shreveport Louisiana and departed his earthly life on May 14th, 2022, peacefully in his sleep. James acknowledged the Lord at an early age in his life and joined Mount Olive Baptist Church and was baptized by the late Rev. CH Walker. After relocating to Houston, Texas when in 1944 he met and joined in holy matrimony Mrs. Mattie J. (Nixon) Casey his faithful companion of 77 years, 6 months and 14 days (to this union were born 14 children). He joined True Vine Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Eld. Dee Washington, where he served faithfully as Church Secretary and Sunday School teacher, he also continued serving as Church Secretary, Sunday School teacher and Sunday School superintendent under the Leadership of Eld. B.J Benjamin, after the death of Pastor Dee Washington. At death of Pastor B.J. Benjamin, he continued his faithful service as Church Secretary and Senior Teacher until his own departure, under the leadership of his son Rev. M. Casey.
James was educated in the public schools of Caddo Parish. He retired from Armco Steel after 40 years and rarely if ever missed a day where he was a crane operator. After his great love of God and his family to whom he was passionately devoted he also had a great passion for farming and gardening. He could produce vegetables on most any soil, but his favorite spot was his Truck farm in Tamina, TX where he grew crops for over 60 years. He was truly a farmer at heart he even raised rabbits and chickens and at one time even a hog. His whole idea was to not only provide fresh food for his family and friends but to give a break from city life to his children while instilling in them a great work ethic!
