He was born in Jaeryong County in Hwanghae-do Province in Korea on July 26, 1927, as the youngest son to the family of Mr. Kyung Yeon "Joseph" Kim (father), Mrs. Young Rei "Anna" Kim (mother), 2 older brothers and an older sister. Following his mother to the church from early age, he was a devout Catholic. He grew up mastering Judo and graduated from Pyongyang University.
After the independence from Japanese occupation in 1945, North Korean Communist government took their home and land. So, his family moved South of 38th parallel to Kaesong, a city still part of South Korea then, but in 1949 there were several small and large battles near Kaesong. As the youngest son, he was given the task of traveling further South to Seoul with his sister to prepare a home for the rest of the family to join them later. However, in 1950, within days after their arrival at Seoul, the North Korean People's Army crossed the 38th parallel and they were separated from their family in the North. Immediately in the South, he joined the South Korean Navy as the Communications Officer. After the Korean war ended in 1953, he enrolled in Seoul National University School of Law. Upon his graduation from SNU Law School, he was recruited by the Korean Central Intelligence Agency. In 1960, he married his lovely wife, Chan Sook "Anna" Kim. In 1962, his son, John Inkyu Kim was born. In 1965, his daughter, Joanne Yangsun Kim was born.
In 1973, the family moved to Houston, Texas, where they operated a convenience store then tried running an Italian Beef House, a Pizza restaurant, near University of Houston until retirement. The retirement years were filled with happy times with the grandchildren. He was always smiling and making peace, teaching love of God to his children, grandchildren, nephews and nieces. He will be remembered for his kind and peaceful smile. Gazing at his face was like seeing the living Jesus.
He leaves behind his loving wife of 63 years (Chan Sook "Anna" Kim), son (John Inkyu Kim; wife, Heeja Kim; grandson, John Jinsoo Kim; granddaughter-in-law, Jamie Hannah Kim; granddaughter, Jane Jinni Kim) and daughter (Joanne Yangsun Kim-Yi; husband, Marcus Yi; granddaughters, Sarah Yi and Hannah Yi) as well as nephews and their families.
Visitation will be held at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home at 13001 Katy Freeway, Houston, TX 77079, on Thursday, September 14, 2023, from 5PM to 8PM, with Rosary scheduled for 8PM.
