He was born in Gunnison, MS on June 11, 1933 to the late William & Velda Haws. It was there where along with his parents & brother Harold they made their home in a tent along the river bank where they spent their days as fishermen. Herb spoke fondly of the freedom he enjoyed as a young boy going back and forth between his parents & grandparent’s river boats often staying for weeks at a time as he pleased.
In 1953 working as a brick layer in Cairo, IL, Herb met the love of his life Hilda. Shortly after love at first sight, he was drafted into the Army. They married on August 30, 1953, two weeks later he reported for duty. He went on to serve both in the Army & Army National Guard from 1953-1957 during which time he earned rank of 2nd Lieutenant in multiple classes. Their marriage of 61 years is a love story for the books!
From Humble beginnings, Herb & Hilda went on to build a beautiful life for themselves & their 3 children Dennis, Russell & Pamela. He lived a full life, a poverty to wealth story that led him & his family to Houston, TX. where they started the family business All Star Construction. Herb would say “I have been poor and I have been a millionaire but it is here in the middle with family that I have found the most happiness.”
After earning Doctorates in Theology, Ministry & Divinity from Slidell Baptist Seminary. In typical Herb Haws style he hit the ground running sharing The Lord fearlessly everywhere he went. He had a passion for prison & feeding the homeless ministries. Serving as a Pastor of Northview Baptist Church for 23 years he met many friends and touched many hearts. He worked tirelessly getting a food pantry started at the church that feed over 200 families bi-weekly.
A great leader & motivator. Highly respected man of integrity that left a lasting impression on everyone he met. His positivity was infectious. A light that shined so bright in this world. He cherished his wife & family. He loved God & all people. Herbert Haws was a man that never took life for granted. If ever a man took a life and made the most of it, it was Herb Haws!
Herbert is survived by His son Russell Haws, Daughter Pamela Frenchak, 9 Grandchildren, 21 Great Grandchildren, 2 Great-Great Grandchildren and many nieces & nephews.
