Henry Bruce Gilmer, Jr. was reunited with his Lord & Savior and beloved wife on Tuesday, May 25, 2021, at the age of 84. He was born in San Antonio, Texas on November 23, 1936, to Mr. and Mrs. H.B. Gilmer. Bruce graduated valedictorian from Wharton High School and went on to receive both his Bachelor’s and PhD in chemical engineering from Rice University in Houston, Tx. His love for learning and commitment to education was enduring and was passed down to his children and grandchildren.
During his time at Rice, he met the love of his life, Anita Louise Kelley. The two were married on August 8, 1959 and shared more than 60 wonderful years together. Their marriage was a beautiful example of dedication, compromise, and above all else, enduring love for one another.
After graduating from Rice, Bruce became a successful chemical engineer at Dupont, Tenneco, and Northern Engineering, among others. Over the years, his work allowed him to travel all across the globe, including Japan, a particular favorite of his.
Bruce was a devoted Christian and a lifelong member of the Methodist Church; he was even nominated to serve as bible school class president at Bellaire UMC. Following retirement, he spent his time helping his community and volunteered for Meals on Wheels at the Houston J.C.C. for many years. Bruce was also a loyal Astros baseball fan and enjoyed cheering on the ‘Stros with his wife Anita by his side. When he wasn’t at games or supporting his grandchildren at dance recitals or boy scout events, Bruce was traveling the world with his partner.
Bruce’s love for people radiated through every single encounter he had with others. He had many friends from all different cultures and walks of life and was always eager to learn more about the people around him. His optimism, congenial nature, and curiosity for the world will be deeply missed. Bruce was proceeded in death by his wife, Anita K. Gilmer, and his parents Mr. and Mrs. H.B. Gilmer. He is survived by his two children, Kelley Gilmer of Houston, Tx, amd Bruce and Monica Gilmer of Pearland, Tx; and grandchildren, Mollie Shin and Humberto Gilmer.
