Helen Joyce (Crenshaw) Lawson, 89 years old, went to be with her Lord Jesus Christ on April 2nd, 2018. Helen was born to Troy and Annie Crenshaw on November 19th, 1928. She grew up the oldest of 3 sisters; Helen, Valarie, and Maxine, later their cousin Harold came to live with them.
Helen was a devoted wife, loving mother, elementary school teacher, Sunday school teacher, and librarian. She grew up in Houston and graduated from Howard Payne University where she met the love of her life Jack Lawson. They were married in 1953 and were married for 60 wonderful years. Jack went into the Army and was stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas. While in Kansas Helen served as Director of the Baptist Student Union at Kansas State. After they moved back to Houston, they lived in Lazybrook Edition where they lived for 60 years. Helen was employed with HISD where she taught third and fourth grade.
From Helen and Jack's union they had two wonderful children, David and Linda. Once the children were born she took time away from teaching to stay at home with the kids until they were able to attend school. She was an avid reader and from her love of books she received her Master’s Degree in Library Science from Sam Houston University. Once she graduated from school she went on to become the school librarian in 1981. She worked as a teacher and librarian for well over 30 wonderful years. After retiring, she volunteered in the surgery waiting room at Memorial Hermann, Northwest Campus for 20 years.
Helen demonstrated Christ's love for her family and all the children that she taught throughout her life. She will be deeply missed by not only her family and friends, but all her students and the hundreds of lives that she touched.
She was preceded in death by her husband Jack Lawson, her parents; Troy and Annie Crenshaw, and her youngster sister, Maxine Breed. She is survived by her two children David (Marilyn) Lawson and Linda (Michael) Philpot, grandchildren; Lauren (Brad) Holmes, Daniel (Rebekah) Lawson, Leigha Lawson, Kristin (Derek) Brown, Emily (Steven) Taylor, and Jon David Philpot. She has 4 great grandchildren; Faith, Jillian and Anna Holmes, and Cannon Brown. She also leaves to cherish her memories numerous nieces and nephews.
