Early in life, Helen professed a faith in Jesus Christ and was subsequently baptized in a Redland, Texas river. She later relocated to Beaumont, Texas where she united with St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church and diligently served her Father as a member of the choir.
Following her formal education in Nacogdoches County schools, Helen worked in the hospitality industry. Her remarkable career fostered a reputation marked by her exquisite culinary and freshwater fishing skills.
Helen was joined in marriage to Cleon Clifford Derry. To this union three children were born: Cleal Patrick, Clyde Leonard, and Annie Louise.
Later in life, Helen relocated to Houston, Texas where she lived her final years among her doting family. She loved life, engaging with family, and especially enjoyed listening to her grandchildren sing.
Helen’s earthly endeavors ended in the morning hours of July 21, 2020. She was preceded in death by her devoted parents and loving husband. Helen is survived by her dear children, Cleal Patrick Derry, Sr. of Beaumont, Texas, Clyde Derry (Minerva) of Houston, Texas, and Annie Derry Lartigue of Rosharon, Texas; one sister, Ollie Flanagan of Houston, Texas; a special cousin, Eloise Culbreath of Nacogdoches, Texas; a special daughter, Jacqueline Dorsey (Joe) of Houston, Texas; and a special neighbor, Diana Young of Beaumont, Texas. Helen’s memory is also cherished by 16 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends
