Gwendolyn Gale Berry

Gwendolyn Gale Berry was born on November 29, 1949 in Houston, TX to Alton and Mary Berry. She was the fourth child born to this union. She passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 3, 2020 at the age of 70.

She attended M.W. Dogan Elementary, E.O. Smith Middle School, and graduated from Kashmere High School in 1967. She continued her education at Texas Southern University with a major in Music.

She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at St. John Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Pastor E.L. Fields. She united with New Hope Baptist Church in 1973 under the leadership of Rev. Johnny McDowell, where she served as a Sunday School Youth Teacher and Musician. In 2013 she united at New Light Christian Center under the leadership of Pastor I.V. Hilliard until her health failed.

She spent her final days surrounded by the family she loved throughout her very memorable life. Gwendolyn’s life was filled with multiple illnesses from youth that may have seemed difficult and challenging to many. But those who were touched by her understood that God’s grace and mercy upon her life far exceeded the illnesses she endured. She loved music. She studied piano starting at the age of five under the teaching of Ms. Dequiere. Her love for music was never in doubt. Gwen was one of those artists who rewarded those who listened because she was able to express whatever emotion she wanted in the piece she played. The beauty of her music was in her soul and in her feelings. There, she found peace from the suffering. Playing the piano also taught her perseverance, discipline and improved her emotional state with each cord she played. She was also an avid baseball fan, listening to the Astros games on the radio for the entire baseball season. Her favorite player was Jim Wynn. But more importantly, her most fervent love was for the Lord Jesus Christ and the Word of God. She always had her Bible and hymn book. She was a prayer warrior, she prayed without ceasing, praying for all who asked for prayer. She received countless requests in her lifetime.

She leaves to cherish her precious memory and celebrate her life, loving brother Alton Berry Jr.; devoted sister and caregiver Gloria Saulter; a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, family and friends. She also leaves a very special aunt Joella Fields of Houston, TX and uncle Joe Baker of Natchitoches, LA. She was preceded in death by father Alton Berry, Sr., mother Mary Berry, and brother Leslie Berry.
