Gertha Berlena Hagans was born on February 20, 1922 to Charlie and Leader Hagans in Chatfield, TX. She was the second eldest of 11 children. She is preceded in death by her father and mother, along with her son, Michael, sisters Bobbie Hagans; Willie Mae Brown; Loraine Malone; brothers, Finas Hagans; Artis Hagans, Charlie Hagans, and grandson, Kori Johnson.
Berlena migrated to Houston, Texas in 1941 right after high school where she became a licensed beautician and home caretaker. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at The Fifth Ward Church of Christ. Berlena met her late husband Earlie Mitchell and married in September 1945. They were married for 53 years prior to his departure from this life. To this union five children were born, Michael( deceased), Ruth, Deborah, Roseleta, and Christopher.
Berlena played a part in the civil rights movement. In 1957, she became a Matriarch by being one of the first black families to integrate the Church of Christ in the Kashmere Garden community. This church is now named Kashmere Gardens Church of Christ. Her church family often called her the second Rosa Parks. Her motivation was not to be an activist at the time, but to be able to worship closer to her home. Other African American families began to attend this church and Berlena was still an active member and worshiped at the church upon her parting.
Berlena was a wonderful role model. She was a very spiritual woman. She introduced her children, extended family, and whoever she came in contact with to the LORD. She not only witnessed to all whom she came in contact with about Christ, but she modeled her life after him as well. Many decided to accept the Savior’s call after her witnessing.
Berlena gave her children and many she met a wonderful foundation. This foundation and legacy will continue to grace us. Her wisdom, knowledge, and advice are truly appreciated, and we will miss it dearly. Gertha Berlena Mitchell was a true virtuous woman.
Berlena leaves to cherish her memories three daughters: Ruth McMillon, Deborah Robinson and Roseleta Mitchell and one treasured son, the love of her life Christopher Mitchell; Stepdaughter: Shirley Bisby, Stepson: Derrick Mitchell, Grandchildren: Timothy McMillon; Diedre McMillon and Thomas McMillon, Jr. (Dorothy), Tiffany McLaughlin, Danielle Robinson, Ashlye Lloyd, Kori Johnson (deceased), Kourtney Johnson, Christa Mitchell, Lilian Mitchell; and five great grandchildren and a host of relatives, friends, and church family.
