Born in Laurel, Mississippi, on the 19th of February 1927, and a 1945 graduate of Laurel High School, he served honorably in the United States Navy until 1947, when he matriculated at Oklahoma State University. There, he was a drum major and member of the University band; an active member of ATO Fraternity, and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering in 1951.
After working as an electrical engineer at PHILCO CORP., he accepted subsequent positions with ITT and UNIVAC, serving at both corporations in computer programming and sales. He received the highest salesman award at UNIVAC in Atlanta, Georgia, prior to becoming UNIVAC Branch Manager in Louisville, Kentucky until 1972. After a contractual job to install a computer system at a large hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana, he moved to Houston, Texas, where he opened his own business known as DATA MARKETING, INC., which he continued to operate until retirement in 1980, but offering part-time consulting services for another twelve years until 1992.
Bill was a man of unquestionable integrity, generosity, and was a great raconteur and wit. Throughout his illness, he never lost his sense of humor.
In addition to his expertise in the fields of engineering and computer science, Bill was talented in many other areas: as a musician, a gifted artist, a skilled craftsman, a successful horticulturist; and withal, a true gentleman. For all these qualities, he will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Meredith Hawkins Greene Darwin; a son, Glen Alan Darwin and wife, Jacqui, of Louisville, Kentucky; a daughter, Jana Lei Darwin Strunk and husband, Roger, of Dallas, Texas; stepson, Joseph Edward Greene and wife, Melissa, of Martin, Georgia; grandsons, Robert and Christopher Darwin and Patrick Greene; and granddaughter, Emily Greene.
The memorial service is to be conducted at three o'clock in the afternoon on Friday, the 1st of October, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston, where Mr. Joseph Edward Greene is to officiate.
Immediately following the service, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the adjacent Pavilion.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family suggests memorials be directed to the Star of Hope Mission, 6897 Ardmore, Houston, TX 77054; the M.D. Anderson Hospital and Cancer Center - Head and Neck Department, Post Office Box, 4486, Houston, TX 77210-4486; or a charity of one’s choice.
