We all have are own special memories of Evelyn Zimmerman however many of us share one thing in common. She was the the start of all of our lives. Through a love shared by her and Paw Paw they started a family that grew, and grew,and grew into this this large group of people that all share something of her. Some have her looks, some her personality, some her moral, values, and beliefs, some her love of dolls, some her talent and skill to paint, her love for crafts, her interest in music and traveling. In some way we are who we are today because of her. I consider myself blessed to have her as my grandmother and I am grateful that she was a part my of life. A part of me! I loved and cherished her and I will miss her deeply.

When I think about my grandmother Evelyn Zimmerman I think of what a quietly strong woman she was. Easily embarrassed, she had a very demur air about her yet she strong and willful. Lets face it, a woman who raised five kids a is a dynamo by anyone’s standards. But then she took on two confused grandkids while still raising two sons. And though she wasn’t always happy with us or the position she had been placed in she took it all in stride like she did everything in life.
But when I look back, I can’t help but think what a shining example of womanhood she was. How comfortable she was in her own skin. 
She rarely wore any makeup and when she did she never felt beautiful in it or comfortable with it. She never went on a fad diet or started a new exercise program just to fit into a pair of designer jeans. She didn’t care about owning a designer handbag or Jimmy Choo shoes. She never thought about getting a face lift or a tummy tuck or lipo suction. 
She wasn’t a slave to fashion. I think she had heard of Christian Dior she just didn’t CARE about it…it meant NOTHING to her.
She never cared about superficial, pretentious things in any way…The big house, the designer furniture, the latest European car, Spa treatments and vacationing abroad. While other ladies her same age grew to EXPECT these types of things over their lifetimes she never wasted a minute of her time being envious.
She aged gracefully, with no apologizes for the changes that came her way. She was the originator of the phrase…”It is, what it is”
She never slapped $200.00 face cream on her face in an effort to look younger than she really was, as a matter of fact I bet she never put $10.00 cream on her face.
She didn’t care about movie stars or celebrities and she cared even less about trying to be like them or live like them in any way.  
So in a time where the entire world seems consumed with more, more, more. The latest stuff, the newest gadget, let’s think of the simple needs we all really have in this world. And the Love of a mother or Grandmother, Great Grand Mother, Great, Great Grandmother is all we really need. 
All the stuff does not define us and she knew that early on. She didn’t have to read a self help book to find that out. She knew it within herself.
When I think of all the people who spend their lifetimes searching for spiritual meaning, attending church every week and preaching to everyone around them she was the perfect
Example of what a Christian is supposed to be and yet she never believed in any of that at all. 
She was honest and fair, faithful to her husband, hard working, I don’t think I ever heard her use a swear word ever other than a funny joke she might be telling. And even then she would always blush. She was free of deceit and envy. I think she lived by the golden rule better than most every Christian I have ever met.
She acted in good faith on her own, without fear of scripture or eternal damnation.
And she never faltered. She didn’t change course later on in life and suddenly “find God” in a effort to “redeem” herself and her past. No apologies. No regrets. She was who she was, no need to back paddle now.
The honesty of that has guided me through my entire life and helped me form my own spiritual beliefs.  Which proves that you don’t need religion to be honest, and good, loving and kind or Free of material obsession and vanity. You just need to be true to yourself. 
Be REAL.
Thank you MawMaw for all you gave me and everyone here today. You have left a legacy of good honest and hard working people we can all be proud of because our family is unique, thanks to you. 
We have a richness of history and heritage we all share that came from these two people we all love so much. Not many families can say that today. Anytime we struggle with the day to day questions of life we need to stop and think of where we all came from. The answers are all right there. 
Evelyn Zimmerman was not a PhD. But she was wise in ways we can all draw on. She gave us everything we needed to make it through our own journey called life. 
I loved her, I appreciated who she was, I respected her, I will honor her long after today and that as I ask you all do the same for this wonderful mother to us all. 
She will be missed.
