Emilio Luna Jr., age 89, of Houston, Texas passed away on Tuesday, November 2, 2021. Emilio was born to parents Emilio Luna and Dolores Manriquez Luna in Houston, Texas. He married the love of his life, Amparo Ybarra Luna on April 8, 1956.
He is survived by his children, Laura Luna Hedger, Emilio Luna III and spouse Jen Nie Luna, Lisa Luna Arriaga and spouse David Arriaga, Mario Luna and spouse Rosy Luna and Rene Luna and spouse Jamie Luna; his grandchildren Monica Overstreet, Amanda Arriaga, Kristen Brett, Kimberly Stockdale, Gabriel Luna, Danielle Luna, Mario S. Luna, Kirsten Neiman, Kathryn Arriaga, Sydney Luna, Marissa Luna; and great-grandchildren Kayla Luna, Aaliyah Luna, Jacob Luna, Luke Overstreet, Marshall Neiman, Elijah Overstreet, Declan Neiman, Amara Ross, Rhys Overstreet, Finley Neiman and Saliese Ross. Surviving siblings: Lucy L Hernandez, Francesca L Shoemaker and Joe L Luna.
Emilio was predeceased by his wife, Amparo “Pye” Luna, siblings Felix Luna, Richard Luna, Timoteo Luna, Alfred Luna; sisters Rosie L Crespo, Lillie L Duran, Carmen L Mottu and his grandson Jacob Luna.
Emilio was known for his love of music. After being honorably discharged from the Airforce, where he performed with the Airforce band in Clark US Airforce Base in the Philippines Islands and in Randolph US Airforce Base in Texas. He continued his musical career by performing in numerous bands including big band music, straight ahead, bebop and Latin jazz, salsa, musica tropical and contemporary; including the Emilio Luna Combo, Emilio Luna y Su Salsa Moderna. A special mention of the band “Luna D’ Lite” which included his brothers Tim, Alfred and Joe doing the mixing and recording. Emilio was a multi-talented musician. He played the flute, saxophone, piano and the drums.
When Emilio wasn’t playing his sax he was a licensed barber and worked with his brother Richard at Luna’s Barber Shop located off Edgebrook Dr. in South Houston.
A gathering of loved ones & friends for Emilio will be held Thursday, November 18, 2021 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home, 6900 Lawndale Street, Houston, TX 77023. A celebration of life will occur Friday, November 19, 2021 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, 6900 Lawndale Street, Houston, TX 77023. A graveside service with military honors will occur Friday, November 19, 2021 from 11:00 AM to 11:30 AM, 6900 Lawndale Street, Houston, TX 77023. A reception will follow Friday, November 19, 2021 from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, 6900 Lawndale Street, Houston, TX 77023.
