Elizabeth Erskine Cannan Tidwell, age 86, of Houston, died peacefully at home with her sons by her side on May 5, 2023. The middle child of three sisters, Beth always forged her own path. She was remarkable for her ability to be herself, uninfluenced by others' expectations. This was most evident in her chosen moniker, "Crazy Beth Tidwell." Beth approached life with her particular blend of pragmatism, stoicism, and enthusiasm. Those who knew Beth best remember her love of gardening and digging in the dirt, her loyal dachshund companions, and her dedication to her sons. She modeled kindness to both animals and humans, self-reliance, and the notion of being your unique self, long before it became popular. Beth was a native Houstonian, who attended Lamar High School, volunteered at Hedgecroft Polio Hospital, and then went on to graduate with a degree in Home Economics from Southern Methodist University, where she was a member of Delta Zeta sorority. Always drawn to the medical field, Beth worked in several private medical practices over the years, as well as serving as an active volunteer with the Houston Zoo Mobile and at Second Baptist School, while also being a full-time mom. Beth is lovingly remembered by her sons, Mark and Ross, for her devotion and the active role she played in their lives. Beth was preceded in death by her husband Rex Lyon Tidwell, Jr.; parents Doris Elida Thompson Cannan and Arthur Milton Cannan; and her sisters Doris Ann Cannan Ewing and Priscilla Jean Cannan. She is survived by her son Mark Tidwell and his wife Lisa; son Ross Tidwell and his husband Timothy Angle; granddaughters Sarah and Katherine Tidwell; nieces Mary Miller, Susan Epple, Beverly Hays, and Lisa Stone; and nephews Bryan Ewing and David Stone. A private service will take place at Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to All Texas Dachshund Rescue ATDR.org or to a charity of your choice.
