Elizabeth "Betty" Z. Flannery

Elizabeth Z. (Betty) Flannery passed away on May 29, 2023, at age 76 after a brief illness. Born on January 12, 1947, in Houston, Texas, she was preceded in death by her parents Otto L. Zanek and Josephine Ross Zanek and sister-in-law Pamela Zanek. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, William T. Flannery, sons Matthew R. and Patrick W. Flannery and daughter-in-law Schauna Flannery. She is also survived by her siblings, Anne Hatcher, John Zanek and Walter Zanek and nephews and nieces Jim Hatcher, Zach Zanek (wife Olta and son Noah), Rachel Myers (husband Jeff and son Kolton); Heather Smith (husband Matt Smith and children Mason, Jace, and Alivia); and Amanda Balusek (husband Cecil and children Dylan and Marshall).

She graduated in the class of 1965 from Lamar High School in Houston. After earning a degree in education at University of Houston in 1969, she became an elementary school teacher and taught at St. Stephens Elementary in Houston and St. George’s and St. Peter’s elementary schools in San Antonio before devoting her time to raising her two sons.

An avid reader and lover of horses, she enjoyed the outdoors but more than anything she delighted in visiting or talking with her small cadre of close friends and family.

Funeral Service will begin at 10am Saturday, July 15, 2023, followed by interment at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your local Humane Society.
