Edith "Edie" Marie McCauley

Edith “Edie” Marie McCauley, 58 of Houston, Texas passed away on August 21, having lived a full and interesting life. Edie is survived by her husband, Michael Dean McCauley, her son Dean Edward McCauley, and her son Joseph Theodore Michnick, his wife, Yvonne, and their son, Nathaniel Joseph Michnick. She is also survived by her brothers Steven Wells and his wife, Maricarmen, and Charles Wells, his wife Mary, and their daughter Lauren Wells. She was preceded in death by her brothers Bradford Wells, and Donald Wells, and her parents Frances Lebryk and Edward Wells.

Edie was born in Indiana, but shortly thereafter her family moved to Nassau Bay, Texas for her father’s job with Amoco. She spent her early years living in a neighborhood near the new Johnson Space Center, and enjoyed regular outings to NASA where, among other things, you could talk to a “real astronaut” on the phone. In 1969 her family moved to Madras, India where she spent elementary school in a small international school with classmates from around the world, an experience that would forever influence her view of the world. During this time, her family traveled extensively on their annual trips back to the U.S. seeing sights around the world in places like Greece, Hawaii, Paris, Tokyo, Egypt, London, Thailand, and the Vatican.

Upon her return from India, she moved to Naperville, Illinois, graduating from Naperville North High School in 1980. Shortly after high school she got married and started a family, eventually moving to the Houston area where her three brothers resided. After becoming a single mother, she attended Texas Business School, and landed a job with Amoco where she would work for the next 30 years. She started as an administrative assistant, but also worked as a technologist, and a safety trainer, before finishing her career in Human Resources, surviving the merger with BP along the way. As a safety trainer, she traveled extensively from south Texas and Louisiana to the Arctic Circle in Canada. She was proud to say that Amoco took care of her for her entire life.

In 1993 on a blind date, she met her devoted husband, Mike, with whom she would spend the last 25 years of her life. With all of Edie’s travel experiences, life experiences, and work accomplishments what she was most proud of was being a mom. She got the opportunity twice, 19 years apart, first with Joey and then with Dean. She was a Mom who was quick to lend an ear and offer advice, especially on difficult topics. She knew the way to conquer challenges in life was to recognize them and meet them head-on. The only thing that ever compared to being a mom was when Edie became a Grandma to Nathaniel in 2008. Whenever Nathaniel came over, Grandma made sure he was the guest of honor! Edie wanted everyone to feel welcome in her home, and she was happiest when she was at home with family.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 29 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. The service will be private, but livestream is available, and the family invites you to join them for the service virtually. If you are so moved, the family welcomes flowers, or in lieu of flowers, donations to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation in Edie’s name.
