Precious Memories "To everything there is a season" Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 A time to be born - February 7, 1932, Dorothy Jean Ligon, the fifth of seven children was born to the late Allen and Sarah Ligon in Nacogdoches, Texas. A time to plant - Dorothy planted many seeds during her lifetime on earth. She was kind and caring toward both young and old. A time to build up - Dorothy attended E.. J. Campbell in Nacogdoches, TX and upon a move to Houston later graduated from Phyllis Wheatley High School and attended Texas Southern University, majoring in Nursing. A time to love - The love of Jesus Christ came first, and then came the love of her life, her husband, Harold. To that union, one son, Ronald was born. Dorothy loved her family and was a loyal friend to many. A time to work -- Dorothy taught pre-school for many years at the Pleasantville United Methodist Church School, and later worked at the Texas Medical Center Child Care Center. In recent years she worked for the Harris County Board of Elections as a Precinct Judge. At the time of her demise Dorothy was a faithful member of the Pleasantville United Methodist Church, where she was an ardent supporter of the Gospel and Church Lay Leader. She served and supported various Church Ministries including the Choir, and the Butterfly Praise Dancers. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Pleasantville Civic League and a member of the Gardenia Garden Club of Houston. Dorothy had a servant attitude and dedicated her later years to serving as a Harris County Precinct Judge and recognized for her contributions to the local election process including early voting and voter registration by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Dorothy's service also included participation in the Houston Citizens Policy Academy 16th Class under the administration of Former Police Chief C.O. Bradford. A time to die - God called Dorothy home from labor to rest on Friday, April 10, 2015. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Allie "Melba" Garner, Wilmuth "Honey" Butler, Martha "Lou" Zollicoffer, Bertha "Maxine" Thompson; and brothers, Robert Edward Ligon and Earl White. A time to weep - Our eyes are wet with tears, our hearts are burdened and our faces stained with sorrow. But God's sustaining power is yet with us. A time to mourn -- Dorothy leaves to cherish her memories: her loving husband Harold of 64+ years; son Ronald Martin, Sr. (Ethel); two grandsons, Ronald Martin, Jr. (Dia) and Patrick Martin; two great-grandchildren, Nyjai and Rylee Martin; sister, Barbara "Sal" Alba; two sisters-in-law, Althea Martin Johnson and LouVon Daniel; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and friends. Services for Mrs. Martin will be held Saturday, April 18, 2015, at mt. Vernon United Methodist Church, Houston, Texas 77020. The viewing will begin at 9:30 A.M., followed by the Life Celebration at 11:00 A.M. Mrs. Martin's earthly tabernacle shall rest alongside loved one's at Paradise Cemetery North.
