Donald Garland Davis, born November 5, 1932, died peacefully on October 6, 2014 in Houston, Texas. He grew up in the Houston Heights and attended Reagan High School before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1951. Upon his return from naval service, he entered the grocery business in Houston and remained employed in this vocation until retirement. In 1956, he married Martha Mary Hanel and raised a family of four sons. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America, Troop 544, for many years and most recently attended St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, where he volunteered for the church food pantry.
He is preceded in death by his parents, E.G. and Viola Davis, and by his three sons, Brian Davis, Andrew Davis, and Dennis Davis. He is survived by his wife, Martha Davis; his three sons, Stephen Davis, Jeffrey Davis, and Larry Davis; his two grandchildren, Shane Davis (wife, Allison Davis) and Stephanie Davis (fiancé, Chad Piepenburg); and his great-granddaughter, Emily Davis. He is also survived by his sister, Catherine "Betty" Gorden.
A memorial gathering for Don's friends and family will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Saturday, October 18 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church Parish Hall, 3600 Brinkman St., Houston, TX 77018. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to the St. Rose of Lima Food Pantry, 3600 Brinkman St., Houston, TX 77018, or Friends for Life Rescue Shelter, 107 E. 22nd St., Houston, TX 77008.
