David Blaine Mitchell, 89 of Houston, Texas passed from this earth surrounded by his family on April 12, 2016 at 5:28 a.m. He was born September 10, 1926 in Tulsa , Oklahoma to Lula Marie Hall-Mitchell and Elwood Monroe Mitchell and was the youngest of 7 children. He graduated from Will Rogers High School. After graduating high school, Dave honorably served his country in the Navy during WWII. Dave Mitchell married the love of his life, Elizabeth Ann Mitchell on November 28, 1946. Dave Mitchell will be remembered by many as a “good Samaritan” and the man in the white hat. For many years, everywhere he went, Dave sported a white Stetson hat. He worked for Tennessee Gas Pipeline and Tenneco Oil Company in Houston for over 32 years until he retired. After retiring, Dave and his wife Ann became very active in the Lone Star Chapter of the American Hibiscus Society where they were nationally recognized for their contributions. He enjoyed writing his Points to Ponder stories sharing his life’s experiences with those he loved. Dave was a Master Mason from BELLAIRE LODGE AF&AM #1336 for over 58 years and also a member of Texas Talkers Toastmasters.
Dave, beloved husband and father was preceded in death by his wife Ann Mitchell and son David Mitchell, II, grandson, Christopher Jones, his parents and 6 brothers and sisters.
He is survived by daughters Terry Martin and husband Glenn Martin, Cheryl Jones and husband Mike Jones and son, Woody Mitchell and wife Terri Mitchell, grandchildren; Tiffany and husband Darren Tournaud, Tillery and husband Maxfield Camp, Haley Throckmorton, Caleb Throckmorton, Lyndee Jones, Casey Mitchell and partner Jeremy Hall, Sydney Weeks and husband Mathew Weeks, Laura Smith, Erin Smith, great grandchildren; Danielle Tournaud and partner Josh Adams, Tristan Tournaud, Blakely Mitchell, Lane Mitchell, London Jones, Kallen Weeks, great great grandson Bentley Adams and great grandson Camp to be born in July.
Services will be held Saturday, April 16, 2016 at Waltrip Funeral Home at 2:00 p.m. Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Waltrip Funeral Home. Dave will be laid to rest with his wife and son at Woodlawn Garden of Memories Cemetery.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the doctors and staff at Memorial Southwest Herman Hospital for exceptional care. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Lone Star Society of American Hibiscus, Pat Merritt, 9715 Oasis Drive, Houston, Texas 77096.
