David Edwin Lewis, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, passed peacefully from this life into the loving arms of our Lord, surrounded by his family on January 29, 2022 at the age of 86, at his home in Houston, Texas.
He was born on July 5, 1935 in Houston, Texas to Marie Rose Ribbeck Lewis and William Edwin “Eddie” Lewis. David attended Christ the King Catholic School through the 8th grade and graduated from St. Thomas High School in 1953. He attended the University of Houston where he received a Bachelor of Science in Geology in 1962. While at the University of Houston, he was in the R.O.T.C. and was a member of the Cullen Rifle Drill Team where he achieved the rank of 2nd Lieutenant of the United States Army. He served six months active duty in the Artillery Division at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma and received his Honorable Discharge from the Army as 1st Lieutenant in May of 1967.
David met the love of his life, Elaine, when they were both in high school during the summer of 1952. After a long and beautiful courtship, they were married on June 8, 1957 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. He began his career as Exploration Geologist for Rutherford Oil Corporation in November of 1957 and remained in their employment as Manager of Exploration up until the time of his passing. Over the course of his sixty-four years with the Rutherford Oil Corporation, he gained the respect and admiration of all his colleagues. He was known for his honesty and integrity across the oil industry, becoming not only a loyal and steadfast employee, but a most trusted friend. David was also a member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists for 50 years.
David loved boating and fishing, especially at West Bay in Galveston. He enjoyed the many camping and skiing trips to Colorado with friends and family. He always looked forward to the yearly, memorable hunting trips to Buda and Pearsall, Texas. David loved music and sang tenor in the choir at St. Ambrose Catholic Church. He and Elaine formed lifelong friendships in the choir and continue to keep in touch with them to this day.
David also enjoyed the outdoors. Above all, David loved to leave with Elaine on Friday evenings and drive to his farm in Austin County. Here, he raised cattle for FFA shows and worked on his beloved farm. His farm was his haven away from the bustle of the big city. Many unforgettable memories were made at the farm, and it will always hold a special place in the hearts of David’s family.
David is survived by his loving wife, Elaine, of sixty-four years; brother Chris Lewis and wife Virginia; daughters Dayna Reina and husband Skip, Mandy Holland, Debbie Schultze and husband Gary; sons David Lewis, Jr. and wife Kim, Michael Lewis and wife Sally; grandchildren Lauren Reina, Joseph Reina, Kristin Clegg and husband Chris, Megan Pulido and husband Mikey, Austin Holland, Justin Schultze and wife Aimee, Jordan Schultze and wife Krystal, Leah Kitchens and husband Andrew, Lindsay Lewis, Ryan Lewis, and Ashley Lewis; great-grandchildren Brynn Reina, Madison Chevalier, Emma Clegg, Everleigh Clegg, Maddox Pulido, Harper Schultze, Callie Schultze, Charles Kitchens, Jaxon Lewis, Charlotte Kitchens, and Jameson Kitchens, all of Houston, Texas; nephew William Lewis, nieces Caye Leman and Sarah Moursand.
