Cora Beatrice Johnson Greene was born on August 19, 1930 in Brenham, Texas to Earlene Williams Johnson and David Felder Johnson. After the loss of her mother, Cora’s father moved to Houston, Texas with two of his very young children, Robert Earl and Cora Beatrice.
Cora spent her formative years in Houston’s Historical Heights. She attended 23rd Avenue Elementary School and Harper Junior High School. She was a proud graduate of Phyllis Wheatley Senior High School.
Having a great interest in cosmetology, Cora attended Espinola’s Beauty School and fulfilled her dream of becoming a licensed beautician and shop owner, a passion she enjoyed for over forty years. She sponsored numerous color, cutting and styling clinics with hair style shows and continuing education courses throughout the Houston and Dallas Texas areas.
At an early age, Cora became a member of Wayman Chapel AME Church, along with her family. She often shared many fond memories of that church, the church choir and the community choir. After marriage, Cora and her husband moved her membership to Pleasantville United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir and taught a Youth Sunday School Class.
Mrs. Cora Greene accepted Christ under the teaching of the late McEvoy Gannaway and later joined Buck Street Memorial Church of God In Christ under the leadership of the late Elder Charles Harrison. At Buck Street C.O.G.I. C., Cora taught Youth Bible Study and an Adult Sunday School Class. She later joined Ellis Memorial Church of God In Christ under the leadership of the late Elder Frank Sherrard; she continued to serve in ministry until her health declined and no longer allowed her to attend services.
Mrs. Cora Greene was married to Alvin Jerome Greene for 49 years. He preceded her in death, just a few days short of their 50th anniversary. While Mr. and Mrs. Greene were the doting parents of Cassandra and Garland, the doors to their home swung wide open for many others to reside with them. Family members, their classmates, classmates of their children, godchildren, and friends were always welcomed. There was always enough love and food and there were never too many people.
Mrs. Cora Beatrice Johnson Greene was preceded in death by both parents, two beloved sisters – LaVern Stagg and Sherrie Reynolds; her dearly beloved brother – Robert Earl Johnson Sr; 2 God children – Willard Rachel III and Darrell Vanness.
Cora’s generosity, caring and outspoken manner will be lovingly remembered by her daughter – Cassandra Peter (Gerald), son – Garland Greene (Vera), brothers – James Johnson of Kansas City, Missouri and David Johnson (Akiko) of Stone Mountain, Georgia; Sisters – Joan Harper of Naples, Florida, Linda Andrews and Mary Bowman of Houston. Grandchildren – Demetric Kegler, MaKesha Foster, Ryan Turner, Monica Goffney(Bill), Kevin Maryland and Danyel Bennett (Deon); 8 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandsons, many cousins, numerous nieces, nephews, God- Children, church family members, neighbors and friends.
To God Be the Gory for a life well lived and a legacy worthy of celebrating.
