Charles Edward Slocum, 95, died peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, November 22, 2023. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle. He was born in Plaquemine, LA, on November 12, 1928. While growing up in Plaquemine he loved hunting and fishing in the nearby woods and bayous of the Atchafalaya basin. As a young athlete, he was a state champion Golden Glove boxer. He met his future wife, Gloria Ottwell, while attending Plaquemine High, and they began dating while they both studied at LSU in Baton Rouge. After college, they married in 1951, and moved to Sulphur, LA to start their family and careers. They traveled to Biloxi, MS and Watertown, NY during Charles’ air force training and active duty. After returning to civilian life, they settled in Houston, TX, where they lived for over 60 years. Charles pursued a successful career in oil and gas exploration. He and Gloria were active members of Oaks Christian Church, and they made many life-long friends as they lived and worked in Houston’s Oak Forest community. Charles was an avid sportsman who loved hunting and fishing in his leisure time. He and Gloria were loyal LSU alumni, who were always ready to cheer for a Tiger victory. Throughout the years, their love, wisdom and kind support have touched each of us. We will always cherish their memory.
