Dear Randy, Charlotte and family,
I am so sorry for your loss and I hope you take comfort in knowing what wonderful people your father and mother were. They were such a big part of my life when growing up in Oak Forest and attending Oaks Christian Church. Whenever I think of my youth, I always think of them and how important they were my life.  They were so kind and generous in all that they did, and served as wonderful role models for me and my sisters.  Eeveryome in my family was so fortunate to have known your father and mother.  I am sorry that I was unable to attend the service, as Idid not learn about it until Friday evening; but, please know that you are in my thoughts and will always have happy memories of your father and mother.

I extend my deepest condolences to your family during this time of profound loss. The news of Charley's passing brings a heavy heart, and I want to express my sympathy and solidarity with you.
One of my most cherished memories is the simple joy of walking up to visit Charley on his porch at the lake and seeing his welcoming smile. The lake house became a haven of shared experiences and laughter with the embrace of family and friends.
Gatherings at the lake, with Charley and Gloria at the center, hold special memories. The camaraderie shared with Charlotte, Al, Randy, Amber, Lance, Lee, and the entire family created a rich mosaic of love and togetherness. Reflecting on the times our families shared, marked by fish fries, birthdays, holiday celebrations, and the simple joys of being together, have woven a tapestry of warm memories that will forever hold a special place in my heart. Charley's welcoming hospitality and the inviting family atmosphere made those moments truly special. 
I have a framed picture in my living room of my son, Wade, and I holding up a string of fish that we caught when we were out fishing with Charley. Charley was known as the best fisherman in Aztec Cove, and he graciously helped Wade and I catch our limit of fish for the first time on Lake Livingston. I recall that we accidentally got his fishing pole lines crisscrossed in a tangled mess, but he never scolded or complained...at least to us.
As we mourn the loss of Charley, let us also celebrate the legacy of love and connection he leaves behind. The lake house gatherings, with Charley as the patriarch, exemplified the beauty of family bonds and lasting friendships.
While I deeply regret not being able to attend the funeral in person, please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you all. May you find solace in the memories of a life well-lived and the enduring impact Charley had on each of us.

Some Memories of my older brother Charles E. Slocum

As we his family mark the time between his death and burial, we remember him as a person who was equally in love with the natural world and the people who were part of his life. His eyesight for identifying birds in the air was unparalleled, and he never seemed to lose his sense of awe at the natural world. As observant of people as he was of nature, his goal was to get you to talk about yourself rather than listening to him. You found yourself telling him all about your strengths and weaknesses, as he listened and remembered. Fishing, hunting, bird lore, and kindness to others were his passions. As his “little sister”, seven years younger than he, it thrilled me when I would be practicing the piano and he would take the time to sit by and listen to me play. Not only would he make positive comments and provide suggested improvements, but he gave the priceless gift of his time, which is the greatest gift of all. As his sister I was aware of how quick he was to help my mother with the back-breaking task of clothes washing before there was even a wringer washing machine! Laundry for a family of five involved hauling an endless number of heavy stacks of wet laundry from the tub to the line. We all pitched in, but he made the greatest effort not to complain. (continued) part 2 I also remember his modesty: he had leadership skills that we did not recognize until his high school graduation ceremony. He won the highest character award available in our small community of Plaquemine: the American Legion Award. My mother couldn’t believe he hadn’t alerted her, but that was who he was. His leadership potential continued to shine at LSU, where he was an officer in the ROTC, going on to serve in the air force after college. Of course he was the first in our family to graduate from college. He hitch hiked to LSU for class every day, and never complained about not having a car or anything else, for that matter; complaining wasn’t in his DNA. His leadership by example included service to his church as we grew up: he sang in the choir and supported our small church in any way he could. As a father here in Houston, he was a loyal supporter of Oaks Christian Church for many years. He and his wife were youth leaders, setting examples of service for others. His degree in geology was a natural outgrowth of his love of the natural world, leading to his successful career in the oil industry. The same instincts that allowed him to understand people were apparently at work in his geological pursuits. He seemed to be able to spot oil where others could not. Observation plus knowledge were at the base of his excellence in the field. One particular memory from our childhood was his skinning a rattle snake so he could make a belt (I believe it was a Scout project). The large snake was hanging from the garage ceiling and I stood as far back as possible as he lifted the knife to a space right below the snake’s venomous weapon. “Charlie, be careful!” my mother exclaimed, “you’re an inch from death”. But these were the pursuits that made him unique. (to be continued)

(continued) part 3 Friend to all who needed him, fierce advocate for his family, my brother has always been special to me. At times when I have needed support in my life, he has always leaned in to help. He will be missed by us all!

I admired Mr. Slocum a great deal because of his zest for life and absolute devotion to his family.  He always made me feel welcome at his home and I almost felt like family because he always was truly curious about what was going on in my life.
RIP Charlie.

Charlie was a wonderful next-door neighbor for forty-five years. We remember his love and dedication to Gloria, his children and grandchildren and their families. We spent many hours together talking about our families, the oil and gas business and a little politics. 

Charlie always had a ready smile and something interesting to say. You can tell a lot about a man by his handshake. Even in his last days it was strong and firm. 

We miss him!

My late husband, Jim Hunt, was a long time friend and colleague of Charlie's. Jim moved to Canada when he married me and spent the rest of his life here. I never met Charlie but he and Jim had many long phone conversations. I also spoke on the phone with him and we would argue about the correct pronunciation of "route" and other differences between southern words and northern Canadian ways of saying them.
I know Jim cherished his friendship and is probably enjoying seeing him in the big oil patch upstairs.  Karen Curtis Hunt, Toronto.

So sorry. I miss you already Grandfather. I will miss our Friday night margaritas at Tia Marias. The sweet kiss on my cheek everytime I saw you. Your sense of humor and knowledge of so many things. I know that you and MiMi are dancing in Heaven. Love you.
