Charles Lee Simms

Charles Lee Simms was born November 23, 1936 in Leesburg, Mississippi to parents J.B. and Talitha Simms. Charles (or Charlie) as he was known to some friends entered into Heaven to the Lord on July 22, 2020 at the age of 83. After a long battle with Parkinson/Super Nuclear Palsy he left peacefully thru Heaven's gates to meet his Savior, Jesus Christ.

Charles lived in Mississippi during his early years until 1953 when his family moved to Baytown,Texas. He attended Robert E. Lee High School and graduated there in 1955. He later attended Lee College in Baytown, then finished his education with a BA Degree at the University of Houston. He retired from Exxon after 40 years there. In 1956 he married Linda Rae Prince of Highlands, TX. He was the youngest ordained deacon of Second Baptist Church in Baytown. He left as Chairman of Deacons in 1970. He became a member of Long Point Baptist Church in Houston and served in many leadership capacities including the longest serving Chairman of Deacons at that church. He was a Bible Study teacher for 50 years.

Mr. C. L. (Charlie ) Simms, Operations Manager, Card Center Transition Team, has elected to retire on September 30, 1994, after more than 38 years of Company service.

Charlie began his career at the Baytown Refinery in General Services on June 4, 1956. Attaining his Accounting degree from the University of Houston in 1961, Charlie transferred to Humble Oil and Refining Company's Marketing Accounting Center in 1963. Later, he joined the Card Center in 1967 and served in a number of supervisory assignments before becoming Processing Manager in 1988. While in this capacity, his Mail Inserting Group received the prestigious Houston Area Mail Center of the Year award from the Houston Postal Customer Council and the U.S. Postal Service in 1992.

Most recently Charlie has been instrumental in managing the physical closing of the Card Center's operations, including records transfer to G.E. Capital or destruction, as well as fixed asset redeployment and sales. In addition, he has made many valuable contributions during his tenure with Exxon, from managing the largest first class mail processing center in Houston, to furthering the quality and safety initiatives in the Card Center.

We sincerely appreciate Charlie's contributions and wish Charlie and his wife, Linda, the very best in their retirement years.

He is preceded in death by his parents, J.B. and Talitha Simms, his daughter Debra Ann Simms and daughter-in-law, Joetta Simms. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Linda Rae Simms; son, David Lynn Simms; grandchildren, Clayton Lynn Simms, Khoury Danielle Baez, Elizabeth Ann Hayes and husband, Eric Hayes; three great-grandchildren, Eric Hayes, Jr., Ethan Hayes, Elijah Hayes of Highlands, TX. Also surviving is his brother, Richard Simms and wife, Denise Simms, of Willis, TX and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

The family received family and friends from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., Monday, July 27, 2020 at Waltrip Funeral Directors. Services followed at 11:00 in the Waltrip Chapel, Rev. Bob Craig, officiating. Interment then followed in Woodlawn Garden of Memories.
