Carolyn Sue Hammons Verret Poole, born on June 3, 1945, went to be with the Lord on April 17, 2024. She was predeceased by her parents, Elbert Frazier and Marie Hall Hammons; and spouses, Paul Verret and Raymond Poole.
Carolyn is survived by her brother, Roger Dean Hammons & wife Becky. She is also survived by her 3 children and 6 grandchildren who adored her. Children include: Daughter, Amy Lynn Verret - Godfrey (Randy); Son, James Ray Poole (Ashley); and Daughter, Jana Marie Poole - McLain. Grandchildren who lovingly and affectionately call her "Mimi" include: Branden Randall Godfrey, Ashlyn Marie Godfrey, Henderson Ray McLain, Ryanne Elizabeth Poole, Mason Randall Poole and Reagan Parker McLain. She is also survived by numerous family members and special friends.
Carolyn was born in Little Rock, Arkansas and raised in Houston, Texas. She attended Smiley High School and was a graduate of the class of 1963. She obtained her Texas Cosmetology & Hair Dresser's license during high school. Carolyn attended Sam Houston State University where she obtained her Bachelor's degree in Education. She completed requirements and received her Texas Teacher Certificate in May of 1973. She was a special education elementary school teacher at Garfield Elementary in Pasadena ISD for 5 years. She became one of the first female locomotive engineers in 1979 when she went to work at Southern Pacific Railroad. Carolyn spent the majority of her working career at Southern Pacific which later became a part of the Union Pacific Railroad, where she worked for 30+ years and retired from Union Pacific Railroad in 2016.
Carol was very active in many organizations throughout her lifetime. As a youth, she was a member of GA (Girls in Action) and other church activities at Loyalty Baptist Church. As an adult and mother, Carol spent much of her time as a parent volunteer at Wainwright Elementary, Clifton Middle, and Scarborough High School. She was active as a parent volunteer for school trips, activities, and organizations. Carol was involved in her children's education and extracurricular activities. She was supportive of teachers, and involved in drill team, football, basketball and other activities in which her children participated. As a retiree, Carol was a member of the SP Retirees Group, the GIA ladies auxiliary and National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employees (NARVRE). She was a member of Loyalty Baptist Church and White Oak Baptist Church for many years.
A visitation for Carolyn will be held Friday, April 26, 2024 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A funeral service will occur Saturday, April 27, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home, 6900 Lawndale Street, Houston, TX 77023. A committal service will occur Saturday, April 27, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home, 6900 Lawndale Street, Houston, TX 77023.
