Campbell Arthur Griffin, Jr., beloved husband, father, and grandfather, peacefully passed away at home on Saturday, the 14th of December 2024. He was 95 years of age. He was born in Joplin, Missouri on the 17th of July 1929, to Campbell Arthur Griffin and Clara Marie Smith Griffin.
Campbell graduated from Joplin High School in 1947 and attended Joplin Junior College, receiving an associate degree in 1949. He went on to attend The University of Missouri receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science in 1951 and a Master of Arts degree in Accounting in 1952. He was a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity, Rho Chapter.
Upon graduation, he joined the Army which brought him to San Antonio, Texas and served in the Army Audit Agency, reaching a rank of Staff Sargent. He then entered law school at The University of Texas, receiving his J.D. in 1957.
He joined the law firm of Vinson & Elkins in 1957 and became a partner in 1968. His law practice was concentrated in the area of corporate finance and securities law. He was a member of the firm’s Management Committee and was the partner in charge of opening the firm’s Dallas office in 1986. He retired from Vinson & Elkins in December 1992.
He was a member of the American Bar Association, Texas Bar Association and Houston Bar Association and was particularly proud of being the founding Chairman of the Texas Business Law Foundation, serving as a director from 1988 until 2000. He also enjoyed serving on the boards of the Houston Pops Orchestra and Cornell Corrections, Inc.
In retirement, Campbell taught as an adjunct professor of Administrative Science at the Jones Graduate School at Rice University from 1991 to 1993 and served as a councilman for the City of Hunters Creek from 1993 to 1995.
Campbell met the love of his life, Margaret Ann Adams, at a Memorial Day party in 1958. They were engaged by July and married in October 1958. They were blessed with two children, Cam, and Laura. The family enjoyed many cross-country vacations which led them to discovering the beauty of Estes Park, Colorado.
In retirement, Campbell and Margaret traveled around the world, enjoyed spending time with their children and grandchildren, dined with their many friends, and spent several months of the year enjoying the views of Rocky Mountain National Park from their home at Windcliff in Estes Park. Campbell was an outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing in Texas, Mexico, Argentina, and Alaska.
He particularly enjoyed his time hunting at the St. Charles Bay Hunting Club near Rockport, Texas with his son, Cam, and grandson, Campbell. He and Margaret were founding members of the Houston Racquet Club and were long time members of Bethany Christian Church, and then St. Martin’s Episcopal Church.
His parents and sister, Mary Ann Hesseltine, predeceased him.
Campbell is survived by his wife of 66 years, Margaret; son, Campbell Arthur Griffin III and his fiancé Eve Lominac; daughter, Laura Ann Davis; grandchildren, Stephanie Ann Davis Medlin and her husband Zach, Austin William Gage Davis and his wife Rachael, Campbell Arthur Griffin IV, and Griffin Robert Edward Davis; and great-grandson, Wyatt Wayde Medlin.
Campbell will be greeted in heaven by his beloved dogs, Heidi, Fritz, El Jefe, and Lucy.
The family would like to thank his devoted caregivers, Consuela, Emike, LaShonda, Mary, Kyle, and Kate.
Friends are cordially invited to greet the family during a visitation at ten o’clock in the morning on Saturday, the 21st of December, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston, where the funeral service is to commence at eleven o’clock.
Interment will follow via, an escorted cortege at Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery in Houston.
