Byron Glenn Brittain, almost 92, peacefully entered the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on August 3, 2022. He was born in Gulf, Texas, on August 18, 1930 to Alice Nabors Brittain and George Carroll Brittain. The family soon moved to Pasadena, Texas, where Glenn was brought up with his older brother and sister. In his youth, he played football, sang in the choir, and played trumpet in the high school marching band.
After graduating from Pasadena High School, Glenn joined The Air Corp and reported to Ellington Air Base in Clear Lake, but was not called to serve. He then moved to Dallas where he got a job with an insurance company and met the love of his life, Patricia Patrick, of Cleveland County, Arkansas. Glenn and Pat were soon married, and returned to Pasadena where they raised three adoring daughters together.
In 1950, Glenn began his 42-year career with Champion Paper Company. He was dedicated and hard-working, earning numerous awards and accolades throughout his tenure. Glenn worked his way up the ladder over the years, and retired as the Superintendent of Maintenance in 1992.
Much of Glenn’s life was devoted to service at his beloved church. Glenn and Pat were founding members of South Main Baptist Church of Pasadena, which began in 1954. They were dedicated to raising their daughters in the church, and the family was there every time the doors were open. For the next 65 years, Glenn joyfully served at South Main as a children’s Sunday School teacher, choir member, and deacon, and he was the first and only Maverick class director from 1976-2017. He was faithfully involved in church outreach, visiting and assisting homebound members, and was the first to help when anything in the church needed repair. Glenn also delivered food with Meals on Wheels for many years. He had a huge heart for serving others, which was evident in everything he did at church, in the community, and at home.
When he wasn’t at church, Glenn spent his time reading his Bible and enjoying nature. He loved to be outside gardening, birdwatching, and sitting on his porch swing listening to the rain. Glenn could fix just about anything, and was particularly skilled at working on old clocks. He could spend hours tinkering in his garage or his workshop. Watching Houston sports was another favorite pastime, and Glenn especially loved cheering for the Astros.
It’s impossible to put into words what Glenn Brittain meant to his loved ones. He was encouraging, loving, sincere, inspiring, optimistic, humble, compassionate, selfless, industrious, faithful, charming, gregarious, content, thoughtful, and quick-witted, just to name a few of his traits. Glenn was the Fruits of the Spirit personified: He was Love, he was Joy, he was Peace, he was Patience, he was Kindness, he was Goodness, he was Faithfulness, he was Gentleness, and he was Self Control. He had a unique way of making others feel special and treasured. His joy was in the Lord, and he delighted in his family. Glenn was endlessly devoted to his precious Pat, even after her death in 2011. He cherished time with his three daughters and three sons-in-law, six grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren, and they adored and respected him greatly. His joyful spirit naturally drew others to him, and he will continue to be a blessing to those who knew and loved him.
Above all, Glenn wanted the entire world to know Jesus. He lived out his faith each and every day, through his final moments on Earth, and his eyes were constantly fixed on Heaven. He was always eager to share the gospel with everyone he met: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life." John 3:16. “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 10:9. Because of Glenn’s unwavering faith in Jesus Christ, we have the blessed assurance that we will see him again.
Glenn has been joyfully reunited in Heaven with those who preceded him in death: his dear wife Patricia Patrick Brittain; daughter Glenna Brittain Spain; parents Alice Nabors Brittain and George Carroll Brittain; brother George Carroll Brittain, Jr.; sister Wilma Brittain White; and son-in-law Charles Arthur Riggs. He is survived by devoted daughters Stephanie Brittain Riggs (The Woodlands, TX) and Cindy Brittain McWilliams and husband Tim (Prosper, TX); and six grandchildren and their families: Robert Riggs, wife Lauren, and daughters Avery, Brittain, and Landry (Conroe, TX); Christopher Riggs, wife Preeta, and children Colin, Cameron, and Caitlyn (The Woodlands, TX); Summer Spain Spooner, husband Justin, and children Blake, Sutton, Sadie, and Sloane (Prosper, TX); Sara Spain Shuart, husband Justin, and children Collier, Marin, and Warren (Dallas, TX); Allison Reed Batson, husband Collin, and son Brooks (Dallas, TX); and Marissa Reed Palmer and husband Drew (Oklahoma City, OK).
Glenn’s Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 13th, 2022 at 1:00pm at South Main Baptist Church Pasadena, 4300 East Sam Houston Parkway, Pasadena, Texas 77505. The family will receive guests at a visitation immediately prior to the service from 12:00pm-1:00pm.
A private graveside service will be held at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery.
