Billie Joyce Glasscock

Billie Joyce (Simmons) Glasscock, age 81, wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend, passed away on Friday, August 23, after a valiant fight with Alzheimer’s, was preceded in death by parents, Lillie Faye and C.V. “Sonny” Simmons and daughter Cynthia Louise Glasscock. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Jack M. Glasscock, sons, Stephen D. Glasscock of Alexandria VA and Stuart D. Glasscock, daughter-in-law Belinda D. Glasscock, grandson Maxx R. Glasscock, nephew C.V. “Sonny” Simmons III and niece Terri Simmons Wright, and other nieces, nephews, friends and relatives. She never stood silently in line and conversed with everyone close by. She loved all children and would stop and talk to them whenever or wherever they crossed paths. She was born at home June 24, 1932 in Streetman, Freestone Co., TX. Her family moved to Palestine, TX where she started school. In 1940 they moved to Houston and she attended Henderson Elem., Jackson Jr. High, and Stephen F. Austin High School where she was elected a Majorette her senior year. Because of her industriousness she also attended Sam Houston High School taking a business course learning to operate a comptometer. Billie first met her husband, Jack, at church where they enjoyed many youth events. They had their first date on her 14th birthday, June 24, 1946. It had to be an afternoon date because of their youth, Jack was 15. It was a trip by city bus to a local movie house. Billie was a hard worker and insisted on helping with family finances by working whenever she felt her children’s welfare warranted it. She worked for Gulf Oil Company three different times. She also worked for A. O. Smith Co., several different attorneys and the Aldine Independent School District. She was an artist. She painted and decorated, arranged created mosaics, made dolls, and wrote poetry. She was very creative and her family and friends benefited greatly from her talents. Her poetry was published; her dolls and paintings were sought after and purchased. Billie & Jack did everything together. They loved doing church work, playing bridge, playing games, ballroom dancing and square dancing. They performed on the Larry Kane TV Show, the World’s Fair in New Orleans, and at the National Square Dance Convention as members of the Houston Spirits Square Dance Teams. The family will receive friends at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home on Tuesday, August 27th at 12:00 pm followed by the funeral and graveside services.
