She was born in Houston on the 21st of March 1921. She graduated from Lamar High School, and later attended the University of Houston and Feather & Feather Commercial Art School. She was a talented artist and loved gardening, playing bridge, and traveling. She was a member of the Newman Circle, a Catholic women’s charity organization founded in 1909 by her grandmother and other Houston Catholic women. She attended St. John Vianney Catholic Church. She was also a volunteer in the Women’s Auxillary at St. Joseph’s Hospital for over 30 years.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Claude L. Matthews; her children; Claudia Hanson of Katy, and Thomas Matthews of Katy and Theresa Riggs of Magnolia; their spouses, children and one great grandchild. She is also survived by her sister, Leota Guenard Hill, of Newport Beach, CA.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from two o’clock until four o’clock in the afternoon on Wednesday, the 28th of March, in the Drawing Room of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
A funeral service is to be conducted at eleven o’clock in the morning on Thursday, the 29th of March, in the Memorial Mission Mausoleum Chapel of Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery, 12800 Westheimer Road in Houston, where an interment is to immediately follow in the Stations of the Cross section.
