Bertha Theresa Kahanek

She is survived by her husband, Vernon John Kahanek, Sr., and two children, Greg Kahanek, and Veronica Brittain, her grandsons, Trey, Michael, and Alexander Brittain, and her siblings, Eugene Cortines, Wilma Price, Juanita Timberlake, Frances Perkins, and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her son, Vernon John Kahanek, Jr., and her brother, Leo Cortines.

Bertha was born on May 10, 1929 in Nacogdoches, Texas to Anthony and Nettie Cortines. She moved to Houston in the early 1950s and met Vernon at the Catholic Youth Organization at St. Anne Catholic Church. They married in 1953. Bertha was a member of the Hilshire Village Civic Club and St. Cecilia Catholic Church. She will be remembered by her family and friends for her dedication to her family, her wonderful cooking, her calm nature, and her beautiful smile.

Visitation will be at Earthman Funeral Directors in the Hunter’s Creek Chapel, 8303 Katy Freeway, Houston, Texas 77024 on Sunday, November 4, 2012 from 5:00 until 8:00 PM with a vigil service at 7:00 PM. A Mass of Christian burial will be on Monday, November 5, 2012 at 10:30 AM at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, 11720 Joan of Arc, Houston, Texas 77024. Interment will be at Memorial Oaks Cemetery.
