died August 14, 2018, in San Antonio, Texas. Her parents are Arthelia Stieffel Snyder and
Edward Martin Snyder, Jr., of New Orleans and Houston. Barbara completed grades 1 – 8 at St.
Rose of Lima Catholic School in Houston. She also attended in Houston, St. Agnes Academy
and St. Pius X High School, from which she graduated as valedictorian in 1959. She earned a
B.A. cum laude in education from Louisiana Polytechnic University in 1963 and an M.A. in
English from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 1990 with a 3.9 average.
Barbara taught secondary school English for 25 years in Texas public schools. Eighteen of those years she served on the faculty of John Marshall High School in San Antonio, Texas, where she was
recognized as a “clearly outstanding” teacher. She also served as adjunct faculty in the Alamo
Community College District for 5 years. Barbara was a vibrant lady with many friends and was
active in her community.
Barbara was preceded in death by both her parents; her beloved sister, Sandra Snyder Mondin,
who taught English at San Antonio College for 25 years; her dear Aunt Isabel Snyder, professor
of Spanish at Loyola University, New Orleans, for 24 years, and her cousin and Rosemary
Brugier, of New Orleans. Barbara is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jeffery and Jessica DeCuir of San Antonio; her son and daughter-in-law, Gavin and Victoria DeCuir of Denton; her brother and sister-in-
law, Richard and Judith Snyder of Montgomery, Texas; her niece and family, Corinne, Karl, and
Nathan Vorsand; her niece, Robin Snyder; her nephews, Martin and Evan Snyder, also of
Montgomery, Texas, and her cousin Kathleen Piazza, of New Orleans.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 1 at 10 am at the Forest Park Westheimer
Funeral Home in Houston, Texas. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in
memory of Barbara Jane Snyder to St. Pius X High School. Donations may be mailed to St. Pius
X High School, 811 W. Donovan St. Houston, TX 77091.
