Born on September 6, 1941, Barbara Ann Cheeks made her debut into the world by way of William Cheeks Sr. and Alberta Cheeks in Houston, Texas. She accepted Christ at a very young age and was an active member of Central Garden Missionary Baptist Church until her health would no longer allow. Throughout her school years she was active in various clubs and activities until she graduated from Booker T Washington High School in 1958. At an early age Barbara lived a life filled with love, joy, and compassion. Her kindness knew no bounds, and she always went above and beyond to help others. Because of her passion to serve and help others, she chose to become a Registered Nurse. Barbara attended and received her degree from Regina School of Nursing in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1964. Whether it was through her professional achievements or her acts of charity, she left a huge imprint on the lives she touched.
Barbara had a passion for music and cooking. She played the clarinet in school, enjoyed singing in the alto section in the church choir and cooking for a host of friends and family was what she was most known for. Her enthusiasm and dedication were contagious, and she inspired those around her to pursue their passions with the same level of commitment and feistiness.
Family was at the center of Barbara's life. Since she was the second child out of seven, she was charged with the task of helping take care of her siblings. Even after everyone was grown and had their own family, she still felt the need to make sure they were good.
One day during her time in New Mexico, Barbara met a handsome young soldier by the name of Levy Rogers Jr. They dated for a while and decided that they couldn’t see life without one another. Levy and Barbara said “I DO” on September 15, 1962 and from there the Rogers Legacy began. From this union three magnificent children were born: Karen, Kendall, and Karmen. Barbara was a loving, caring, and devoted wife. As a mother, she raised her children in love, was supportive, selfless, and stood firm on what she said and felt. Her beliefs, values and morals reflected strong work ethics, going above and beyond and putting her heart into whatever she did, and ALWAYS stepped out on faith! It was definitely demonstrated at Ben Taub General Hospital, Doctors Hospital Airline, and Cleveland Regional Hospital encompassing Director of Patient Care Review, Quality Assurance Management and Infection Control. Those beliefs and values were also passed down to her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Barbara cherished every moment spent with her loved ones and created lifelong memories that will be treasured forever. Her impact on the community will continue to be felt for years to come. She definitely touched the lives of many!
Barbara entered into her new journey of eternal life on June 12, 2024 peacefully. She was greeted by her parents William and Alberta Cheeks; brothers William Cheeks Jr. and Glenn Cheeks; sister Carole Harrison; and the two she longed for the most; her son, Kendall Rogers and her husband, Levy Rogers Jr.
Her legacy will be remembered and continued by her daughters; Karen Smiley (Eric) and Karmen Walker (Dondrea); Grandchildren Dexter Smiley; Ivan Smiley; Kayla Rogers; Adrienne Smiley; Demetra Matthews, Dondrea “Ray” Walker II and Mya Walker; Great grandchildren; Dallas and Jordyn Fountain; Sisters Genette Smith and Sylvia Ponder; Brother Gregory Cheeks (Yvette), and a multitude of family and friends who will all miss her dearly.
