Avery Mercedes Welborn Tapia

Avery was born in Houston on the 17th of August 2005. On this blessed day, Avery, in true fashion, made her entry into the world not with a cry like most babies, but with unending sneezes. She was literally always creating her own way from the beginning. Avery was always in the pursuit of happiness and spent her last moments with two things she loved; breathtaking panoramic views and one of her most cherished friends, Grace Davis. Avery and Grace were inseparable. They were devoted friends, thick as thieves, like two peas in a pod.

Avery was a little Leo to a T. She was loyal, bold, loving and fiercely protective of her nearest and dearest. She was generous, and a true radiant beam of light. She had a tough exterior ready to take on whatever came her way. Avery was like an onion, and once you peeled back the layers, she had unending love and kindness in her heart that she shared with everyone she came in contact with.

Avery had a deep passion for music. She loved everything from Lana Del Ray’s Young and Beautiful to Bon Jovi’s It’s My life to Ricky Martin’s Vente Pa Ca, Carrie Underwood’s Blown Away, Weezer’s Island in the Sun, Girl in Red, Frank Ocean’s Lost, and Oceans by Hillsong. It didn’t matter the genre; she loved any type of music that resonated with her soul. If the beat had a spark, it would light her fire. Avery also loved art and was a huge fan of Van Gogh. She also loved a good TV show with some of her favorites being Stranger Things, Criminal Minds, and Shameless.

The other loves of her life were family, friends, animals, and God’s wondrous creations. Her mother was her rock, and Avery was her mother’s World. She adored her family like no other. Before his passing in 2019, her grandfather, Rick Miller Welborn, played a very intricate role in her life. He would do anything for Avery, from Barbie playtime, to playing house and having tea parties.

Her friends were also her world. Avery was an extremely loyal and dedicated friend. She would drop everything in an instant to be by their side, to make them laugh or just sit and be present. She also had a huge heart for animals and would have had a zoo if her mother would have allowed it.

Aves loved sunsets and sunrises and was daily capturing her favorites. She loved the outdoors and all the beauty it had to offer. Some of her favorite spots included the beach and the mountains and she most recently fell in love with Colorado. She was in awestruck by Denver; the mountains, the city, and the breathtaking views at every corner.

Avery loved volleyball, and swimming. She played volleyball at Tanglewood Middle School and was part of the Briargrove Barracudas swim team in her elementary years. She was a senior in high school at Lutheran North Academy.

She was a beautiful soul with a contagious smile that would light up a room. She was fierce, bold, and full of conviction about the passions in her heart. She was authentic and always believed it was best to be your honest, truthful, raw self, even in the toughest times.

Avery was a beautiful light in the world that radiated out towards all that were in her presence. She was a goofball that could lighten any mood. Avery will be remembered by her love, kindness, and conviction for those she cared about, and for her tenacity and passion for the world around her.

Avery is preceded in death by her grandfather, Ricky Miller Welborn; her grandmother, Mercedes Alicia Alvarez; great-grandmother Neller Jane Svec; great-grandfather, Jorge Alvarez; and her great-great-grandmother Ora Vanak Kincheloe.

She is already tremendously missed by the surviving members of her family including her mother, Jennifer Welborn; her father and stepmother, Javier and Dalia Tapia; her brothers, Diego and Lucas Tapia; her grandparents, Uberne and Maria Cristina Tapia; her uncles, Uberne Jr Tapia and Eduardo Tapia; her aunt, Crystal Schram; her great-aunt Consuelo Alvarez; her great-uncle Marcelo Alvarez; and her great-grandmother, Teresa Alvarez. Her fur babies, Oreo, Sparkles, Hanna, and Fiona miss her greatly.

Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five o’clock in the afternoon until seven o’clock in the evening on Monday, the 21st of November, in the library & grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.

The memorial service is to be conducted at eleven o’clock in the morning on Tuesday, the 22nd of November, in the Hankamer Chapel of Second Baptist Church, 6400 Woodway Drive in Houston, where Rev. Brad Goad, is to officiate.

The family will gather for a private interment at Forest Park Westheimer in Houston.
