Ashby attended Lamar High School and The University of Texas at Austin from 1940-1941, before serving in the Army Air Corps as an air traffic controller in Greenland during World War II.
In 1942, Ashby married Andree Jacqueline Tureaud and together they had four children, Maureen Riley of Tomball, TX, Ashby Riley III (deceased) formerly of Seattle, WA, Grant Riley of Round Rock, TX, and Brian Riley of Austin, TX. He is survived by five grandchildren, Lexi, Tori, Ian, Paige, and Grace.
Ashby worked as an accountant for the State of Texas Comptroller's office in the early part of his career and for various oil companies as a petroleum land manager in the latter part of his career. After his wife's death in 1993, Ashby moved to Galveston, until Hurricane Ike displaced him and he moved to Austin to live with his son and family.
A special thanks to the men and women who cared for him near the end of his life, Kenny with Home Therapy Austin, Michelle with Hospice Austin, and the many caregivers from Our Family Home Care.
A small graveside service is to be conducted at two o’clock in the afternoon on Saturday, the 1st of October, at Memorial Oaks Cemetery, 13001 Katy Freeway in Houston. Immediately following, all are invited to a reception hosted by Ashby’s niece, Karen.
