Arthur Larris Jackson was born on July 7, 1922, in Bellville, TX., the second of six children to Willie and Virginia Jackson. His family lived in Bellville until Arthur was one year old, when they moved to Houston. He was baptized at an early age at Concord Baptist Church located in Studewood. He was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School. At 19, Arthur achieved two pivotal milestones. He married the love of his life, his childhood sweetheart Horese Jeanette White and he joined the US Marine Corp’s prestigious Mondfort Point Marines where he toured the Pacific Campaign during the height of World War II. While serving in the Corp, his first job was as a Military Police (MP). He was one of the first Black MP’s. He continued to rise in rank until he was honorably discharged as Corporal Arthur Larris Jackson.
After returning from war, he was employed by The US Postal Service for 37 years and as a Real Estate Broker for 10 years. In 1955 he and his wife built their second home in the historic Pleasantville Community where he participated with the Civic League, Boys Scouts, and coached baseball teams. He joined Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church where he served as a devout member under the leadership of Reverend Haywood Wiggins. He continued to serve as Sunday School Superintendent, teacher and deacon under the leadership of Rev. Dennis Jones.
Prior to death Arthur received many honors including an Honorary Doctorate of Divinity Degree, the President’s Life Time Achievement Award from President Joseph R. Biden, the Congressional Gold Medal of Honor from President Barak Obama for his service as one of America’s first Black Marines, a Distinguished Military Achievement Award at his 100th year birthday, and a certificate of recognition from the Montford Point Marines National Association. He also received letters of recognition from President Barak Obama, President Joe Biden, Mayor Sylvester Turner and Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee.
Arthur Jackson was preceded in death by parents Willie and Virginia Jackson; wife of 69 years, Horese Jeanette Jackson; two brothers, two sisters, daughter Carol Jeanette Jackson, son Weldon Jackson, and granddaughter Kilah Jackson.
He leaves to cherish his memories son Charles Edward Jackson (Zarita Jackson), daughter Elaine Jackson Williams (David Williams), son Dwayne Fitzgerald Jackson (Delmena Jackson); Grandchildren Yhontou Jackson/Jackie (Zackery, Zoey), Charles E. Jackson Jr. (Londyn, Corey, Sterling, Cyrus), Jermaine Jackson (Jasmine, Jaya), Dwight Morris Jr. (Dwight III, Cree), JaRon Morris/Sarah (Logan, Luke, Liam), Sri-Lanka Nicole Stewart-Nikki, Sheldon Jackson White (Gregory, Princess, Issiah), Salihah Akinreloye/Richard (Madison), Erika (Raven, Erick), Tamara, Keledra; Great grandchildren - Trenton Williams/Valectra (Trenton Jr, Maddison), May, Sarah, Nazareth, Venus, Kharion, Paris, Avia; Sister in laws, Sherley Holden and Gloria Moten along with a host of nephews, nieces, church family and friends.
