Anne (aka Anne with an "E") Cunningham Sherman, age 73, passed away peacefully with family and friends by her side on Friday, August 5, 2022. In September of 2017, she was diagnosed with Leukemia and she fought that battle till the end of her life. Anne was born December 2nd, 1948 in Houston, TX. She was the eldest of Charles Louis Cunningham and Frances Day Wilkins Cunningham. She had a happy childhood, her parents were loving, generous, and thoughtful; Qualities which Anne inherited.
She had three wonderful children, Jonathan D. Sherman, Dustin C. Sherman and Marianne Carolyne Speer. Being a mother was the most important aspect of her life and she did everything she could to make sure that her children knew they were loved and had a happy life. Education was very important to her and each of her children received a college degree, a fact that she was extremely proud of.
She was fortunate to graduate from Bellaire High School in 1967, fortunate because BHS was ranked 6th high school in the nation scholastically. From there she went to the University of Houston and received a degree in secondary education in 1971. She was an active member of Chi Omega Sorority and served as arush chairman, pledge trainer and President.
Although not a chosen career, she held several Director and Assistant Director positions in research administration for the University of Houston (UH). She became interested in research administration when her friend and fellow sorority sister, Sharon Eilers Rhome, recommended her for a position at UH working at NASA/JSC. After that wonderful experience, she never left the career and enjoyed the important work that the career afforded. Marianne also became a research administrator, a fact she was also very proud of them. She was a member of a professional organization, National Council of Research Administrators (NCURA) and served as Vice Chair and Chair to the region of Texas and Louisiana. When at UHD, she was selected by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to be a fellow and spent 6 weeks in Washington, DC learning about all of the federal agencies. This was a special recognition.
Anne had many friends that were very special to her. She cherished those friendships and knew that each person enhanced her life in special ways that made her a better person.
Anne is survived by her sister and brother in law, Carolyn and Forrest Frazier; son and daughter in law, Jonathan and Shondah Sherman; son and partner Dustin Sherman and Nick Scott; daughter and son in law, Marianne and Jared Speer; grandchildren, Cullen and Katelyn Sherman, Charles Scott, Carter Burns and Sawyer Speer; nieces, Hayley and Annie and nephew Jay, as well as many cousins that she was very close to: Ashley and Peggy, Mary and James, Alice, William and Lisa, Becky and Mark, Chris, Julie and Dan.
