Ann Williams Childs died peacefully and went to be with her Lord on September 8, 2012. Her loving children, Cheryl Childs King of Austin, Leonard Harrison Childs, Jr. of Houston and Brian Allen Childs and his wife, Holly Childs of Pearland, survive her. She is further survived by her four adoring grandchildren, Lewis, Christopher and Catherine King and Alicia Childs and also by her brother, Richard Allen Williams and his wife Beverly Williams of Fredericksburg, Virginia, many nieces and nephews, and her long time friend, Pat Johnson.
Ann was born May 14, 1931 to Allen and Anna Fain Williams in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Her father was a geologist and he moved their family to Houston where Ann entered Poe Elementary. She also attended Lanier Junior High and then Lamar High School where she graduated in 1949. From there she attended and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1953 where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. Ann taught first grade at The Kinkaid School in Houston from 1953 – 1958 and married Leonard Harrison Childs in 1955. Leonard was a successful lawyer in Houston and was a wonderful husband and father until his tragic death in 1971. Ann was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Assistance League of Houston, Houston Racquet Club, Revelers Dance Club, Kappa Mother’s Club and Tri Delta Sorority Alumnae Association. She volunteered and assisted many years with the Assistance League’s School Bell initiative to provide school clothes to needy children, and also volunteered many hours in the Thrift Shop. She was an expert bridge player and a long time member of three bridge clubs. Ann was a very beautiful, kind, loving, selfless, and a gentle soul. She enjoyed hosting social events and brought a breath of happiness everywhere she went. Many friends and family who loved her dearly will miss her.
A memorial service will be held at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home in Houston at 12:30 PM on Saturday, September 15, 2012. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her name to the Alzheimer’s Association at www.alz.org or to a charity of choice.
