Alfonso “Al” Duran, 85, peacefully entered the Kingdom of Heaven to be with our Lord on Tuesday, Feb 28, 2023, in Houston, Texas. Al was born on November 22, 1937, in Houston, Texas. He was the 9th of 13 children born to the late Juanita “Janie” Ybarra Duran and Pedro “Pete” Duran Sr. He graduated from Milby High School in 1957, where he played basketball and was nicknamed Poncho. He attended Wharton Jr. College on a basketball scholarship; and the University of Houston where he studied Physical Education. He worked for the Cy-Fair school system and Goodman Bus Service for 30 + years. Al was an avid Astros fan. He was also a collector of eclectic styles of music and movies. He could always put a smile on your face with his easy-going personality.
Al married Maria Elma Hernandez Duran on August 13, 1961. They lived in the Oak Forest/Candlelight Estates area in Houston, Texas. They were married for 57 years. Maria preceded Al in death.
Al is survived by children Felicia Bruhn, husband Scott, and children Fisher and Logan; Gracie Hancock, and husband Mike, and children Ashleigh and Alex; Greg Duran, wife Laura, and children Blake and Camryn; John Duran, wife Julia, and children Benjamin and Ruby Jewel; sister Martha “Lala” Garcia, brothers Martin Duran, Pete Duran and wife Carmen, and Gilbert Duran; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews; brother-in laws and sister-in-laws; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his siblings Julian, Gonzalo, Virginia “Nena” Saenz, Moses, Arnulfo “Arnold”, Alfred, Jesse, and Frank “Birdy”.
Al was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He will be greatly missed.
