Doris D. Hawthorne, of Hot Springs, Arkansas passed away Monday, February 13, 2017 at her home after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was born March 30, 1930 to the late Glen and Mae Downing. Dee, as she was known to her friends, lived a life of service to others. She was an affectionate wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to many. After retiring from Western Illinois University in 1987, she and Robert (Bob) set out to travel the world, one of her favorite places being the Galapagos Islands. They would eventually retire to Hot Springs Village, where they both enjoyed teaching Square Dancing. In 1995 they moved to a beautiful home on Lake Hamilton. She remained active in the Women’s Club, Bridge Club, and continued teaching square dance lessons. She was most proud to be a part of Levi Hospice, having received two awards for her longstanding service as a volunteer and member of the advisory board. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her son Steve; and three sisters, Marjorie, Irene, and Velma. Cherishing her memories are her husband of 67 years, Robert “Bob” Hawthorne; her daughter, Monica Heatherton; two grandchildren, Adam and Amanda; two sisters, Elaine Scheumaher, and Joyce Girkin; and brother, Kenneth Downing.
