CAREER: Central Intelligence Group, Washington, D. C., research analyst, 1946-48; University of California, Berkley, field work in spoken Tibetan in northern India and Kyoto, Japan, 1953-54, lecturer in Japanese, 1955; International Christian University, Tokyo, Japan, assistant professor, 1955-58, associate professor, 1958-61, professor of linguistics, 1961-62, acting vice-president for education, 1959-60; Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut, associate professor and director of Institute of Far Eastern languages and chairman of department of East and South Asian languages and literature, 1964-71; University of Washington, Seattle, professor of Asian languages and literature, 1972---.
