Helen Young Ing, 93, of Kaimuki, a retired budget analyst at Fort Shafter, died at Hale Ku’ike Bayside in Kaneohe. She was born in Honolulu. She is survived by daughters Merrily Leong (Peter) and Laurel Minagawa (Arthur); grandsons Grant, Kent (Darcy), and Paul Minagawa; sisters-in-law Jane Young and Angeline Ing; brothers-in-law Noble Ing and William Joey Ing; numerous nieces and nephews.
Her parents were Meu Fat Young and Ng Moi Lui Young. She was born and raised in the Downtown/Chinatown area and graduated from Farrington High School in 1941. Immediately after graduation, she went to work as a civilian in the U.S. Navy at Pearl Harbor from 1941-45, then the U.S. Army at Fort Shafter from 1946-80. She started as a supply clerk, moved up the ranks, and retired as a budget analyst.
She married Thomas Kam Tong Ing in 1950. They raised their two daughters, Merrily and Laurel, in their home on 19th Avenue. Even though Helen was a working mother, she always enjoyed cooking, sewing, and going on family outings on weekends.
Tommy and Helen became avid ballroom dancers and would take their daughters to the Cannon Club on the slopes Diamond Head to go dancing on Saturday nights. They later started square dancing and wore matching outfits which Helen sewed. Traveling to Europe and China were special highlights, as were cruises to Alaska, Mexico and through the Hawaiian Islands. They enjoyed tai chi and were active members of the See Dai Doo Society for many years. Tommy passed away in 2008. Helen eventually went to live at Hale Ku’ike on Kaneohe Bay Drive in 2013.
She was predeceased by her husband, parents, five brothers George, Howard, Clement, William, Raymond, and two sisters Lily Yuen and Violet Leong.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2016 at Borthwick Mortuary – Mauka Chapel. Visitation will be at 9 a.m. Services begin at 10 a.m. Burial will be at Hawaiian Memorial Park at 1 p.m.
