Bryan Joseph Murphy (pictured above in 2019 at the peak of Skellig Michael, an island off the west coast of County Kerry, Ireland) unexpectedly passed away on April 9th, 2023 in his home in Honolulu at the age of 41. He was born in Harrisburg, PA on September 3rd, 1981 and grew up in Camp Hill, PA. Bryan graduated from Cedar Cliff High School in the class of 2000. In 2001 he moved to Oahu to attend Hawaii Pacific University. He quickly found that this was where he belonged and spent both his college days and post-graduation years dedicated to the growth and development of the island’s youth.
From 2002 -2008, he worked at the Nu`uanu branch of the YMCA of Honolulu. Between 2008-2014 Bryan worked for the Marimed Foundation and Family Programs Hawai`i. He returned to the YMCA in 2014 and worked at the Atherton, Mililani and Kaimuki branches in various capacities. Since late 2022 he has worked at the Atherton Branch as the Senior Project Director for Teens and Young Adults across the island of Oahu.
Over the years he was instrumental in the leadership and guidance of his amazing Mililani teens who earned the YMCA of Honolulu national recognition for their Feeding the Homeless project in 2019. Other memorable focuses were a successful 2022 fundraising project by the Wilson Elementary 4th and 5th graders to raise money for the YMCA in Ukraine; organizing the YMCA of Honolulu’s annual Youth and Government Program with personal recognition in 2019; and leading the Student Exchange Program with the YMCA of Hiroshima, which included traveling to Japan with Oahu teens in 2017 and 2019.
Bryan is predeceased by his identical twin brother Matthew who only lived eleven days. Bryan is survived by his parents, Joseph and Beverly Murphy of Waipahu and his brother Kevin Joseph Murphy and sister-in-law Shannon Murphy of Swannanoa, NC. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, April 23, 2023 at Christ Lutheran Church in Mililani with Pastor Keith Wolter presiding.
Visitation begins at 1:00 p.m. with light refreshments available, followed by the service, which will begin at 2:00 p.m. The service will be livestreamed on Zoom for those unable to attend. Information regarding the link will be forthcoming.
