Norman E. Schmidt

Norm will be lovingly remembered by his three sons Paul (Anne Marie Walker) Schmidt of Georgetown, TX, John (Shelley) Schmidt of Orlando, FL, and Mark Schmidt of Hernando, FL; and his two grandchildren David and Carly Schmidt of Orlando, FL. He is preceded in death by the love of his life, Ruth (Schindler) Schmidt, his wife of 61 years.

Upon graduation, Norm was drafted for a two-year Army Service. He was trained as a Medic, then completed a difficult Medical Leaders Course at Camp Pickett, Virginia. He arrived in Korea prior to the Armistice but was transferred from the Medics to the 7th Division Headquarters and later to the S2-3 Section of the 17th Infantry Regiment, excluding him from being directly in the Battle of Port Chop Hill, the last big battle of the Korean War. He served 14 months in Korea. Along with the ribbons and medals of the 7th Division and 17th Infantry Regiment, he was awarded the CIB (Infantry Man’s Badge) and the personal Commendation Medal for Distinctive Meritorious Achievement and Service and a hand carved honorary 17th Infantry Buffalo “Goad” of ‘Stick” from local Korean civilians. He left the Military Service as a Sergeant with an Honorable Discharge. Immediately following his Army Tour, he returned to Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY, graduating in 1955 with BFA Degree in Interior Design.

Norman was employed most of his adult life as a Production Manager for publications in Rockville, Connecticut and Cape Cod, Massachusetts. He and his wife lived in Tolland, Connecticut, in a house Norm designed, and then on Cape Cod for twenty-six years before moving to Hernando, Florida in 2005.

He and Ruth did a considerable amount of travel in the US and Europe. They were also genealogists, following their family lines back to the 1600’s.

All his life, Norm was active in the Lutheran Church. Over the years Norm wrote a Biblical 24-page Theology Transcript illustrated with graphics and pictures, entitled, “Thoughts about God”, - Understanding God from a different perspective”.

In his retirement, Norm did acrylic landscape paintings. Most were displayed in their house or given to his family and friends. He also created religious works of art: including “Christ in Thanksgiving” and “The Trinity”, it being his most difficult and complex favorite.

On Friday, January 10, 2025 family and friends will be received at 9 AM at Faith Lutheran Church of Lecanto, 935 S Crystal Glen Dr., Lecanto, FL, and A Celebration of Norms Life will begin at 10 AM. Burial with Military Honors will be held at 1:30 PM at Florida National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Norman's family would be honored if donations in Norman's name were made to either Faith Lutheran Church or Citrus County Blessings at www.citruscountyblessings.org.
