Dr Vincent Anthony Carnaggio, beloved pediatrician to multiple generations of families, died peacefully on October 28th, 2022. He was a loving husband, dedicated father, grandfather and pediatrician to many, as well as an attentive and nurturing gardener. Vincent was born on August 13th, 1926 in Greenwood, Mississippi to Toney and Clementina Carnaggio. His older brother Frank was his closest friend and treasured confidant. Frank passed away October 10, 2009. Vincent is survived by two additional half siblings, Antoinette Klein and Tony Carnaggio. In November, 1942, Vincent enlisted in the navy and bravely fought throughout the South Pacific during WWII. Upon his return from service, he completed high school at Ramsey High in Birmingham and began his long and impressive educational journey at University of Alabama. His navy tour inspired a passion for healing, and he continued his education at The University of Alabama Medical School graduating in 1954. Working tirelessly and juggling multiple jobs with the additional strain of attending medical school, he met the love of his life Jean Scozzaro. They married on May 4th, 1955 and began building a beautiful family. In July 1957, just out of residency, Vincent opened his first office, Pediatrics East just as the Asian flu pandemic was spreading across the country and the polio vaccine became available. He spent grueling hours seeing patients during the day and tending to sick patients at night at Children's Hospital while managing house calls and trips to the emergency room to tend to special patients. While also starting a family, his wife Jean helped at the office as receptionist and bookkeeper. The practice was one of the first to open after hours and weekends to assist the schedules of hard working families who could not afford the time and the costs for trips to the emergency room. When Vincent retired in 2005, Pediatrics East had moved and multiplied several times to serve the growing community of care with multiple physicians. They became the second practice joining Children's Hospital that serves multiple communities across the state. He was fondly referred to as "The Father of Pediatrics" with loyal patronage of three generations of patients. Well respected and principled, Vincent was dedicated to his faith and very humble about his success. He was a fervent Alabama Football fan and dedicated to his faith and higher education Vincent was quick-witted and had the unique and keen ability to tease and touch your heart at the same time. The culmination of an extraordinary life and career, he is greatly loved and missed.
Vincent is survived by his loving wife, Jean Carnaggio and his four children and families: Joseph Carnaggio and his wife Suzanne with their children Courtney, Hannah and Joey Mary Lou Reynolds and her husband Dwight with their son Marcus Clemmy Closson and her husband Tim with their children Aubrey and Matthew Richard Carnaggio and his wife Tammy with their son Francisco The Carnaggio family would like to give special thanks to Comfort Care Hospice and special friend Cheryl Irby. Their dedicated love and care have helped sustain the family.
