Suzanne was a true southern lady, always dressed to perfection from head to toe with impeccably coifed hair and in her signature colors of black or brown. Suzanne was direct and to the point with a heart and passion that had no boundaries. She possessed a quick wit and personality that always made one feel as if she had been a forever friend. And if you were her friend, you were exactly that. Without exception, all that knew and loved Suzanne characterize her as “one of a kind”. Whether gathering for an afternoon glass of wine with her friends in Mountain Brook during the winter months, or enjoying “spaghetti night” with her Blowing Rock posse in the summer, Suzanne was always ready to socialize and would never turn down an invitation. She was a fixture at her favorite bar during football season to cheer on her Crimson Tide, despite being in a sea of Carolina blue, Duke navy, and Wolfpack red. Suzanne was her son’s biggest cheerleader when he opened his first restaurant Saw’s Barbecue in Homewood and along with her daughter-in-law made sure to keep his legacy alive after his untimely death. Suzanne doted on both of her children and all of her grandchildren. She was so proud of all of their accomplishments. Her cats, Bo, Tiz, and Willie, were treasured by Suzanne and were her constant companions.
Suzanne began her career with North Carolina’s premier department stores, first with Ivey’s and then Belk, creating elaborate and magnificent sets at a time when display windows set the stage when shopping was an eagerly anticipated event. It was then she honed her skills as a talented residential interior designer, with projects scattered throughout the southeast. She had a devoted and loyal following, designing multiple homes for repeat clients with a thoughtfully orchestrated style that was uniquely hers. A true aesthete, she possessed an appreciation for life’s finest pleasures, including beautiful spaces, stunning vistas, delicious food and a glass of fine red wine. No matter what life presented, Suzanne was always upbeat and was a force of optimism.
Celebrations of Suzanne’s life well-lived are being planned in Birmingham and in Blowing Rock at a later date.
