Nancy Barton Taylor Latimer of Mountain Brook, Alabama, went home to be with her Lord Jesus Christ on December 7, 2016, after a short battle with cancer. Nancy was born on April 6, 1931, in Columbus, Georgia. She also lived in Nashville and Atlanta. She graduated from Northside High School in Atlanta and continued her education at Virginia Intermont College prior to being employed by the FBI in Atlanta. She met her first love, Dr. Wendell Hill Taylor, Sr. They married and later relocated to Birmingham, Alabama where she raised four loving children. After the death of her first husband in 1995, she met her second love, Joseph Lamar Latimer, and they were married in 2002.
She was a member of Vestavia Country Club, Mountain Brook Baptist Church, The Club, Silhouettes, The Gaieties Club, Crescent Club, Women’s Committee of 100, The Service Guild of Birmingham, and Queen of Spades Garden Club. Nancy was an avid Bridge player, loved to travel and enjoyed hosting many events with her gift of hospitality, always making everyone feel at home. She was very involved in philanthropic endeavors which included, The Big Oak Ranch, The American Cancer Society, The Botanical Gardens, and many others. In 1998, she established a scholarship in her late husband’s name for pre-dental students in the College of Sciences and Mathematics at Auburn University.
Affectionately known as “GiGi” by her grandchildren and great grandchildren, she will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She was more than generous and kind to those in her family, her circle of friends and everyone she came in contact with. She was a lady of great character and a treasure to her family. As a Christian, her faith sustained her, especially in her final days through a difficult illness. Nancy knew that she would spend eternity in Heaven, and this gave her hope as she courageously battled cancer.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Dr. Wendell Hill Taylor, Sr., her parents, Hazel Benbow Barton and Hayward Pentz Barton, her sister, Joy Barton Cook, and her brother, David Pentz Barton. She is survived by her husband, Joseph Lamar Latimer, daughter, Penny Taylor Fuller (Michael), son, Wendell Hill Taylor, Jr. (Louise), daughter, Lindsay Taylor McGraw (Jack), and son, Daniel Barton Taylor (Anna Marie); step daughters Beth Latimer Ahrenhold, Laura Latimer Mills, and Allison Latimer Pugh (William), all of Atlanta; grandchildren Haley Fuller March (Ramsey), Lindsay Rebecca Fuller (Kaia), Caitlin Fuller Van Horn (Jordan), Wendell Hill Taylor, III, Conrad Barton Taylor, Jack Benjamin McGraw, III, Adelaide McGraw Bowen (Brad), Nancy Bailey McGraw, Daniel Barton Taylor, Jr., Charles Edward Taylor, and Herron Elizabeth Taylor; great grandchildren Charlotte Taylor March, Michael Holt March, Lila Louise March, Jack Taylor Bowen, and William Welder Bowen; step-grandchildren Hunter Ahrenhold, Anderson Ahrenhold, Caroline Mills, Katherine Pugh, and Lindsey Pugh.
A memorial service celebrating Nancy’s life will be held at Mountain Brook Community Church on Monday, December 12, 2016, at 2pm, with visitation at the church after the service. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to The Big Oak Ranch, P.O. Box 507, Springville, AL, 35106
