Mike had a deep devotion to Christ and his Catholic faith. The Lord called Mike home on his birthday to begin a new birthday celebration on the morning of March 15, 2020. Mike was the most amazing husband, father and grandfather. He was born to Frank and Sally Sherrill Flemming and was the oldest son of his thirteen siblings.
Mike graduated from Ramsay High School and then attended Jacksonville State University. His greatest sports allegiance was to the University of Alabama where his grandfather was the football team doctor under Bear Bryant.
Mike was the President and Co-owner of Flemming Transfer. Mike took such pride in moving his customers to their new homes. He would often say it’s not just about moving the furniture, but ensuring that the family has a great experience when they move to their new home. In addition, Mike hired and mentored many young men throughout his career teaching them the value of a hard but good day’s work. One of his greatest professional achievements was overseeing the completion of their new warehouse.
Above all, though, was the love of his life, Ruth. She was the girl of his dreams, and from the time in 1979 when he bought her their first beer at the Upside Down Plaza, he was hooked. They traveled, played, laughed and raised a family together. But most of all, they loved each other to the very last minute.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, sister Linda Fife and brother Robert Allen Flemming; his brother-in-laws, Vick Stark, Wayne Hatton, Gary Heusser and Earl Alexander. Mike is survived by his wife of 37 years, Ruth; sons Michael Flemming (Audrey) and Ryan Flemming (Sarah) and the three grandchildren that lit up his life: Betsy, Mimi and Frank. He was so excited about the upcoming birth of his next grandchild in August. Mike is also survived by his siblings: Sally Stark, Molly Hatton, Peggy Heusser, Jimbo Flemming, Wheeler Flemming (Nancy), Anne Gleason (Brian), Terry Leonelli (Michael), John Flemming, Billy Flemming, Andy Flemming (Justin Cox) and KT Flemming (Gina Dobbs). Mike loved his in-laws like his family: Maureen Jordan (Steve) and Colleen Johnson (Hayes). Mike adored each and every niece and nephew.
If you knew Mike, you understood how much he loved life. He hosted an annual Christmas party at his home for the entire family for almost 30 years. He had so many good friends, but special friends in the Patio Club, the Poker group, Grayton Beach Open golf buddies, his high school friends and Bobby Belton a long-time employee. He was a member of The Club and Heatherwood Hills. We have to mention he had been a member of Joe’s Ranch House and still hoped one day it would reopen for one more steer butt steak.
Due to the current pandemic, there will be a private internment. A Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later time. Information will be posted on Ridout's Valley Chapel at www.ridoutsvalleychapel.com.
In lieu of flowers, Mike would prefer donations to either St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, Children’s Hospital of Alabama or the Shelby County Humane Society.
Mike’s last text was “God is good all the time and all the time God is good”. He followed that belief and would encourage all of us to follow his example.
